Screenshot the questions here ↓

1. Do readers know where and when each scene is taking place?
2. What does each character stand to gain or lose at each plot point? Where and how is that made clear?
3. Are my characters’ goals and desires made clear enough that my readers understand their choices? How?
4. Does the story include both meaningful conflict that drives the plot forward and quieter scenes that still serve the story?
5. Would a reader that knows nothing about my story understand what is happening in each scene?
6. How would I describe the tone and style of the narration? Is this consistent throughout my story?

I asked on my stories the other day where my followers are at in their novel writing process and got a few responses saying something along the lines of “Not as far as I should be” or “spending too long on the first draft.”

And first of all, I feel this because this is me! Never did I think that 3 years after starting to brainstorm my story, I’d still be working on my own drafts & revisions (haven’t even given it to beta readers yet, still haven’t decided on a title, haven’t even solidified which of my ending ideas I’m gonna go with).

So hear me when I say, I get it… I feel the “ugh I should be farther along than this” and yet, I know that the only “correct” timeline is the one that truly brings my story to life in a way that makes me proud of the work I’ve done & satisfied in the outcome

Keep going, we’ll get there 🤍 by @lvdletters

This was supposed to be 10 things but it made the post wayyy long so… part 2 coming!!

Somehow when writing a novel, it feels like the closer you get to the finish line the farther you are from it 😂 but hopefully this checklist helps you see how many steps you actually have between now and publishing!! by @lvdletters
