At the screening of “Langit Lupa,” held at 2220 Arts + Cultures on 11/10, Filipinx organizations the Malaya Movement and Gabriela Los Angeles tabled at the venue’s lobby, providing information about current campaigns such as rejecting the PERA (Philippines Enhanced Resilience Act).

Following the screening, directors Enzo Camacho and Amy Lien, Professors Lucy Burns, Josen Masangkay-Diaz, and Joy Sales discussed the ongoing conditions surrounding the Escalante Massacre, martial law as a form of rule, Filipino Migrants in 1930s California, fascism, and labor activism.

The event captivated injustices in areas of the Philippines through art, and the added presentations brought additional perspectives that shared the continuing impact of this dark history. The weekend program was part of Camacho’s and Lien’s artist residency with Active Cultures, a public arts nonprofit in Los Angeles that explores the intersection of art, food, and ecologies through artist-led projects and programs. UCLA students in Professor Lucy Burns’s course, “The Philippines and its Elsewheres,” provided documentation support for the screening and symposium.

On Nov. 9 and 10, 2024, artists Enzo Camacho’s and Ami Lien’s latest experimental, labor-activist documentary titled “Langit Lupa” (Heaven and Earth) (2023) was screened at 2220 Arts + Archives in Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles. The film intricately wove personal testimonies from survivors of the Escalante Massacre that encapsulate both the events of the massacre and its enduring consequences. Camacho and Lien formed deep connections with the people of Escalante who provided valuable insights with their narratives of the killings and of the ongoing exploitative and repressive conditions of land workers. The event ended with a lively Q&A session where attendees shared their thoughts and asked questions.

Image 4: At the theater lobby, various community organizations provided information on the People’s Movement which advocates for the end of repression, war, genocide, etc. One table provided info on donations for the people affected by the recent multiple typhoons that struck the Philippines.
Image 5: Directors Enzo Camacho and Ami Lien present the dangers of being an activist in the Philippines, especially an environmental and land activist. Many are murdered or disappeared, and the role of the government is in all this. The presentation shed light on corruption in the Philippines and its effects on its people. by @lycheelia
