Jack Lydon is the 16th Fittest 16-17 Male in the world.

Six months ago it was looking like he might not even be able to do the CrossFit Games season.

It’s been a helluva graft to get back here and compete again on this

Proud of what he’s come through to come here and compete. by @lydo.08

Before Worlds last December, someone from Jack’s gym sent him a text: “Show them that Mackem grit.” He repeated it to himself all weekend. During the L-sit. On the bike when the monitor started dropping. Standing over the barbell when his back was screaming at him to stop. Show them that Mackem grit.

He placed 6th. Hit a 130kg PB. But tweaked his back on the Clean & Jerk — and the next three months became a completely different kind of training.

Jack is 17. He trains at his dad’s gym, CrossFit Tailored Training in Sunderland. His dad John is the day-to-day eyes. The three of us work together, and when Jack goes quiet, speaking to John gives me the picture. That relationship is one of the reasons this worked.

Because the injury was hard. His mates were progressing — training together, doing everything he couldn’t. He felt isolated. He’d never been here before. He caught himself flipping the frame — from “I want to do well” to “I don’t want to look bad” — and he recognised it. At 17.

We managed the back alongside a physio at the gym, that fine balance of pushing without risking it. He kept consistent. He kept trusting. He did the work.

Then quarter finals came. A workout — bar muscle ups and hang squat cleans — that almost broke him. He was close to stopping. He kept going. “In that moment he made the decision, in my mind, that he was going to the Games. That was the evidence.” - Jak

10th out of 127. But the result isn’t really the point. What Jack went through could have been a very different story without that resilience. He never gets too high or too low, and that emotional control is what keeps him consistent.
