Hello, my name is Lydia and I’m a 49yo powerlifter discovering this sport again and again.

Squat pb, bench pb, total Pb and the biggest raw deadlift I’ve pulled but ……unfortunately lockout got me…. 🚨

Every prep there is a song that catches me - Miley got me this one and she was there every heavy squat.

@briancookpl what a ride! Can never thank you enough for the ride we have been on - I came to you a few years ago with a request of 12 weeks of ‘let’s see what happens but I think I’m done’ after people just leaving me so out of love with powerlifting and really no self belief of continuing in the sport.

Here we are. So many successes later. And at 49yo the best I’ve ever been. This comp We cracked top 10 All time Australian women - ever.

Arian - you are simply the best handler there ever was. My best mate - There has never been a comp with you that has not been a great success. You are so much part of my success I can never thank you and @_hanakinskywalker for all you do. World class.

@leviathan.strength Toman and AJ - your support means so much to me and I hope you know how much having a world class facility helps create world class athletes. Also for providing the squat bars used to warm up and compete with for all athletes. Very grateful.

@jacobtapp__ @kelsey_lockley @arbed74 @kahu_rupene @_carlyswards so much love, respect, gratitude and appreciation for what we all do week in and week out. The watering hole has its balance maintained 😎

Thank you to @vandemonfitness for hosting the comp and to @wrpf.australia and @adamgordonpt - plus all the volunteers who makes these days happen! We truly appreciate how much work it takes to run the comps and also the clean up afterwards. Also @slaughterhousegym_hobart for providing equipment on the day.

For all of you that listen to the good day highs, the bad day lows and the autopsies - you know who you are and you are all so very much part of the journey too.

@444activewear one of the BEST soft suits I’ve ever worn! Very comfortable and for all you big (and small) girls out there - get one now!

I’ve spoken a lot about how much I appreciate the athletes and friends I train with but also I am lucky I enough to coach. For those people around us @leviathan.strength it isn’t also a big notable thing that whilst I am a good powerlifter, I am a damn good strength coach and lucky to currently help and look after @georgiekh_, @_carlyswards @kelsey_lockley @desi.toro and @kahu_rupene .

@kelsey_lockley is an example of some lovely technique, always a perfect example of good solid technique moves weight not only well, but prettily too.

@georgiekh_ is a work horse who quietly gets it done and trusts me to get her stronger than she has already proven at her last comp, but for next APL COMP in October - to the moon!

@_carlyswards who is learning to trust a body she has rebuilt and continues to rebuild but is now confident to hold her own in a gym full of strong people. Including her now!

@desi.toro - my strong girls girl who always leaves people in awe despite her lack of ego, but ever increasing appetite for Kilos on the bar. Always excited to see what body part she can fuck up next ….. 😜

My Maori son - @kahu_rupene . The trust you have in me as I have in you. The heart of a true warrior in a world that sometimes is unforgiving,
You have made me a better person and you have made me endlessly proud. Cannot wait to stand on the platform with you.

To all that help me, trust me, and allow me to help you find a hobby that will guide you and show you how to live your life - thank you.

To Toman and AJ who provide an environment of works class equipment , an Australian gym with no rival, that produces brilliant results - we thank you too. by @lydspt

I have never been a good or pretty squatter. I have had to formulate and optimise a movement pattern that allows me to move weight to attempt to make competition standards. By no means is it an ideal squat pattern that someone without my unique physical issues and limitations should adopt. I’ve definitely faced my fair share of criticism over it and it has been the subject if ridicule both behind my back and to my face. But it gets the job done. And this is the best they have ever been. I’m proud to keep making progress, getting stronger and pushing hard to try and progress this lift when I know I can rely on my deadlift to often get me across the line to the podium. But I won’t be a powerlifter that doesn’t try and be the best they can be at all three lifts. Those powerlifters are often mentally weak and give in to excuses to disguise the fact they don’t want actually work that hard. It’s expensive, and it’s mentally hard to keep pushing something that feels so ridiculously hard to be ‘good’ at. But I won’t ever give up. I just want to squat 4 reds a side this year and then I’ll know that I didn’t give in to mediocrity and I pushed the limit for myself.
Credit to the coaches I have had for always working with what they had to work with. It’s not been easy at times. Huge thanks to the crew that get my through Saturday and help me as we come into comp and need spotters. And as always, huge thanks to @leviathan.strength for the facility they provide.

It’s the year of the squat @briancookpl. This last 2 weeks is the most I have ever squatted for doubles and I have still weeks to go. Each week I am not sure I’ll get it done but here we are….
