This shell flower is made with calico clams - the inside of the shell is visible in the flower petals and the shiny patterned side for the leaves. I find these while walking on Oak Island. It’s currently on display at the Artisans Gallery on Howe in Southport.

So excited to be a featured artist along with the very talented painter Anne Reilly at the Artisans Gallery on Howe in Southport, NC this month. Six years ago, this would not have been something I would’ve ever thought possible when I was decluttering my house during the pandemic and found so many bags and jars of shells I had collected over the years and started playing with them. I went from being a speechwriter in the federal government in Washington, DC to an artist and sheller in coastal North Carolina. Funny how life works out.

Before I get back to shell art projects, I also wanted to share some photos from our time in Yellowstone National Park, where our son works. It is such a special place. The thermal features, the abundant wildlife, and the stunning landscapes and geography are like no other place in the US. #yellowstonenationalpark by @lynndeandesigns

Some highlights of our travels in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. It’s much smaller than Yellowstone National Park, which is about two hours north, but it has such beautiful landscapes and lots of opportunities to view wildlife if you’re lucky. We spent five days in Jackson, Wyoming visiting our daughter, who works there, which gave us lots of time to visit the park at different times of the day. Some wildlife shots aren’t that great because they were way off in the distance, but we saw moose, elk, deer, bison, and a mama bear and her cub. taken in Grand Teton National Park by @lynndeandesigns

We’re visiting our kids in Wyoming and were lucky to be here for an arts festival and a special art show and auction for @markmaggiori, a phenomenal western artist. What a special treat to see his work up close, in person- it’s amazing. The way he paints the sky and clouds with such grandeur- I could look at these paintings all day. Also love his portrayals of cowboys, cowgirls, Native Americans and the animals of the west. His auction was historic - his largest (and my favorite) painting sold for $1.3 million and the auction of two years’ of his work brought in about $9 million! History was made that night. As an added bonus, I met him in our hotel elevator and got to tell him in person how much I love his work, and he was so nice and friendly. Lately I’ve been experimenting with modeling paste, joint compound and texture powder. I was experimenting on a board I had in the garage to get the hang of moving the paste around and creating texture and designs. After this one dried, I brushed a little darker paint to give some depth. Because my desk in my studio is always cluttered with random shells, I just happen to have five broken clamshell pieces. I have been trying to make a flower with earlier. I laid them out and thought it looked cute. I’m not 100% sure I’m done with the shading, but I’m afraid if I tinker too much I’ll wreck it. I never seem to know when to walk away. 😬

Bouquet of surf clam shell tulips in a pen shell vase. It’s hard to see the texture I painted in the background, but in person, the pattern adds a little something to the arrangement. I didn’t have to frame this – I found a mass-produced art piece in a thrift store and painted over it. I like the gold border with the earthiness of the tulips. It feels a bit like fall is coming. It’s 16x16 inches. I’m going to need some time to decide whether I take this one to the gallery, hold it for the gallery’s holiday market in November, or put it on one of the walls in my house. I’ve become a bit attached to it.
