MAKING PLACE!! What a glorious two days in the Cairngorms with @AppliedArtsScotland celebrating craft, heritage and place with generous and thoughtful humans. We discussed who and what holds knowledge and how it is shared; and re/imagined how what we learn and know from one place can be localised to others.

Brilliant work from AAS’s @culturality_project team in contextualising these conversations within a wider programme of activity across the @HighlandFolkMuseum, and huge thanks to everyone who gifted their time (to each other and to themselves), especially to “respondents” @DiggoryBrown, RuthAbi and @Rosemary_JamesBeith for weaving craft and community through the conversations.

And a wee nod to an ‘intervention’ from @DavidBellingham_, commissioned to celebrate the 50th year of @PeacockAndTheWorm, rippling across time and space: “ideas leave objects standing”. They sure do ❤️

WEAVING HERSTORY!! Guess who just became the first woman elected into office of the Aberdeen Weaver Incorporation for at least 804 years…? I won’t lie, I did get a touch emosh hearing the speeches last night, knowing how important this was for everyone there, how much energy has been invested into making this happen, and how much hope it offers for the future. I’m super-excited to be doing this alongside wonderfully supportive humans, and look forward to the new adventures that await! Congratulations to everyone 🎉

I hope the weaving ancestors are just as excited about what this means… for all of us, and for those still to come ❤️

HEAVEN & HELL!! Bringing a little bit of heat to the @ExperimentalUOSpace pop-up at @thescotart Kirk of St Nicholas this weekend, where visitors were invited to contribute to “Alter Cloth”, a cloth woven in community by the hands of many visitors across the course of a day. There was such joy when hands met material, and when visitors were given the chance to become exhibitors.

.
This cloth is number five in a growing series, each one a record of people and place. Every one unique, even those started from the same warp. Each one a collective creation, bringing something into being that would not otherwise have existed, all through small acts of involvement. There’s a parable in there…
.
.
Huge thanks to the team who made this event possible, and to everyone who wove a little bit of themselves into our collective fabric.

CAREER ENHANCEMENT AWARD!! Yesterday evening I had the great privilege to co-welcome guests to @TrinityHall_Aberdeen on behalf of the Aberdeen Weaver Incorporation to celebrate the culmination of this year’s Career Enhancement Award to students of fashion and textiles at @GraysSchoolOfArtAberdeen (@GraysFT).

.
In the fortieth year of this award, we had a brilliant shortlist of students whose work was beautifully displayed during the awards ceremony. Among them, well-deserved awardees: winner Meghan Knox (@meghankdesign), runner-up Emma Milne (@emmajmilnestudio), and highly commended Erin Ellor (@er1n_design). All three exemplify ambition, opportunity and possibility ❤️🎉

These awards celebrate inspiration and aspiration applied through textile thinking and making, which was on show for all to see. After more than 800 years in existence, it’s a delight to uphold the founding principles of Aberdeen Weavers to support high quality craft education and routes into employment in the textiles trade.
.
.
It’s also a joy to recognise the deep importance that Gray’s School of Art places on craft practice and making as core components of design education; and the important role that place, cultural heritage and civic opportunities play as part of a grounded, rounded higher education within the wider @RobertGordonUni.
.
.
Huge congratulations to the students and staff at Gray’s for all their hard work, and gratitude to the members of Aberdeen Weaver Incorporation and staff at the Seven Incorporated Trades for making this all happen.

TEXTILE LOVE!! Today’s prompt from @seam_collective for #SeptTextileLove is “battle”. Sometimes it feels like sustaining a textile practice is a battle, especially when it’s under-valued (in economic terms) and mis-understood (in terms of wider value). The hollowing out of textile education offers within educational institutes is one of those battles, and currently making headlines after a shocking announcement of course closures from the University of Edinburgh’s College of Art.

Sometimes it feels like the battle is out of our hands. But not this one, and not today. Because @AppliedArtsScotland have launched the Thread Counts project to map textile making across Scotland by small-scale makers, artists and enthusiasts; to share the brilliance of what what encompasses, and to re-imagine how it could be configured to better support current and future textile makers to flourish. If you’re a textile maker based in Scotland, please do add your voice to the survey - be counted, and make it count.

EXPERIENCING CRAFT!! A brilliant visit to @HomoFaber “An Island of Light” this week while in Venice. Brilliantly curated by @EsDevlin, it presents craft as experience, as process, as embodied knowledge; where the maker is celebrated (and exhibited) alongside the making; where objects and making tell stories. The use of technology and audio to augment the experience set a new bar for how craft is presented, understood and experienced. There’s so much from this that I’ll carry forward. It would be soooo brilliant to see something like this celebrating Scottish craft…

ARSENALE!! Day 3 of Venice Art Biennale was at the Arsenale - curated exhibition, Applied Arts Pavilion and more national pavilions. So many delicious intersections between craft, folk art, sculpture and contemporary art. Highlights for me included Morocco, Italy and India pavilions - innovative, beautiful, provocative, thoughtful.

LA BIENNALE!! A brilliant few days away in Venice with arty pals, taking in @LaBiennale and collateral events including @scotlandvenice, @HomoFaber and more. Selected pics from days 1&2 at Giardini and nearby - the curated pavilion and a selection of international pavilions/showcases. Highlights were anything 3D, anything textile, anything data, anything performance, and anything that brought those together. Intensive, joyful, inspiring and fun.

HELLO!! It’s @seam_collective #SeptTextileLove time. What a month to be a textile maker!

Today is intro day, so here’s me - gazing off into the distance, singing to the sea, screaming into the void? I do all of these and more, sometimes in front of a loom.
.
.
I’ll be dipping in and out of the prompts this month, as energy allows, and look forward to following along with everyone else.
.
.
Big love to @AuralTextiles crew members @DippingLug and @OrlaStevens, who created this gorgeous hand-painted, embroidered, zero-waste cloak I’m wearing here, the design and decoration of which is inspired by shipping forecasts and wind from the water. This was part of an early days project sharing my love for data-inspired textile design with fellow makers, together with @archjoy. It’s a love that has endured, and sits at the core of my making still 💚 by @lynnesloom
