Join us for WSU Alumni at Amend tomorrow!!

I have been planning this event since the spring in collaboration with my colleague, Allana Clarke. Allana has cultivated the garden and will be serving delicious food made from its plants at 5pm. A fashion show will follow at 5:30pm. Free!

This presentation features the work of @waynestatefashion alumni in a fashion show @amenddetroit and aims to highlight the talent, effort, and originality of our accomplished graduates in the context of an outdoor garden in full bloom with climate resilient heirloom plants.

Alumni were selected to participate in this public event through an open call process. We sincerely thank jurors Juana Williams, Ryan Seng, and Rachel Sultana for their time and consideration!

Featuring:

Sam Abeme Nguema
Emily Betz
Daynah Grant
Zuwaib Razzaq
Madison Muszynski

In addition to support from @designcoredet, this event is generously sponsored by @waynestatecfpca Development Office and the Office of Alumni Relations, @artatwayne, and @waynestatefashion.

Soft Slow is up through Sunday March 8!

I am so proud of the work in this exhibition, which includes blouses, banners (including two new banners for new zero waste garments: pants and a vest), and drawings.

In the company of beautiful work by Ansley Givhan, all thoughtfully curated by Emily Wilkerson and installed by Ruben Rodriguez.

Backyard peach trees (planted long before us) were abundant this year and we hardly kept up with the picking, processing, and gifting.

I am carrying this theme of abundance (currently reading Robin Wall-Kimmerer’s The Serviceberry) into a new academic year–my first as a tenured professor. I got to this point with so much support from colleagues, family, and friends. It is an honor and a relief (BTS: a year (or 5?) of anxiety, self-doubt, etc).

It is not an easy time to be an academic in the face of cuts to research and threats to free speech but I am optimistic as long as my students keep showing up and making art/design about the issues that matter to them that we will get through it. May this privilege inspire me to keep showing up too. by @m.argareth.ull

I spent two weeks earlier this month @hospitalfield in Arbroath, UK. It was a peaceful and focused dream of a residency and I was lucky to be in the company of thoughtful artists and writers in such a bucolic setting.

I followed a couple of patterns by @birgittahelmersson and worked in half-scale, which conveniently fits Emery right now. I also designed, drafted, and made several muslins for a new zero waste trouser.

1. My ZW Blouse in half-scale
2. Grounds/gardens of Hospitafield
3. Visit to Auchmithie
4. Tour of waxed cotton manufacturer, Halley Stevensons
5. Studio on day 2
6. Installation by Sinéad Hargan and 500 local elementary school students
7. Patched denim at a charity shop
8. Studio on day 13
9. In-process pattern draft
10. Billie Zangewa’s “Temporary Reprieve” in Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood @dcadundee

Half-Scale ZW Banner (Marigold and Indigo)
2024
Pieced, secondhand, cotton sheets hand-dyed in marigold and indigo
35 x 35 in

Photos by Joseph Tiano. Courtesy of Library Street Collective.

I made a half-scale version of the zero waste blouse pattern for this banner. I haven’t sewn a half-scale blouse yet, which is sometimes done before a full-scale to test a pattern and its design elements, but I was happy to have the opportunity to make this version. One of the things I love about garment patterns is the potential they offer to make something over and over again, learning in the process. by @m.argareth.ull
