WhatupdoeDetroit! We’ve got an extra special documentary film for all you slow fashion lovers….coming to town September 27th at The Senate Theater called HANDMADE FUTURE, a documentary that asks whether artisans might just be the ones who save us. AND the director, Kirsten Dickerson, will be present and available for the VIP hour before the film as well as for a Q&A after the film. Filmed across Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, India’s Golden Triangle, Oaxaca, Appalachian Kentucky and the Cotswolds, it follows rug weavers, block printers, broom makers and slow fashion designers as they push back against fast, cheap production and strive to restore a frayed world through beauty and human connection. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Kirsten Dickerson, whose background spans ethical fashion leadership, global women’s empowerment work and regenerative travel and design. @artist.and.nomad Thanks to Yvette Jenkins and her work with @lovetravelsimports and the @senatetheater for making this possible. This Earth Day I’m feeling incredibly grateful for this crew, all the things we’ve learned this semester at @ccs_detroit, and our progress building the Garden Lab for Eco-Creative Futures at @creativebodyinstitute. It’s been a dream to teach this course and incorporate more sustainability into our photography and art-making. The work is never done, and there are many failed experiments along the way, but there is a brighter path ahead as we strive to live in balance with each other and our delicate ecosystem 🌿 Please join us for the pop-up exhibition NEW DIRT this Friday, April 24, 5-8pm at 1144 Pingree Street in Detroit to see work made by the students and their mentors this semester and get a sneak peek of the garden so far!

In her "Zero Waste" series, Margaret Hull oscillates between making garments and banners out of zero-waste patterns she designs. For her exhibition at Other Plans, “Soft Slow," Hull presents both a garment and abstract versions of the same pattern, alongside her drawings for the "Zero Waste Blouse." Available as an edition of 6, each "Zero Waste Blouse" uses all of the fabric of a 60 x 58 inch piece of yardage, emphasizing Hull’s commitment to slow design and sustainability. Stop by to catch Hull’s exhibition “Soft Slow,” and join us to celebrate Hull’s show and Ansley Givhan’s exhibition on Sunday, March 8 for a Closing Reception (3-5pm). I mages: Margaret Hull, “Zero Waste Blouse,” 2024 , handmade blouses, oxford cloth, polyester thread, dimensions variable, edition of 6. Other Plans is open today, 12-5pm! We hope everyone had a beautiful Mardi Gras. Lately we've been diving into the beautiful book our friends @followriversinstitute created in conjunction with their incredible exhibition on Louisiana artist Tina Girouard, "Sign-In." We can't help but think about the important legacy of female artists in light of our program and our current exhibitions by Margaret Hull and Ansley Givhan, as well as Tina's fabric works and the presence of found objects in her performances and installations. Stop by today to sink in to Ansley's exhibition "Woolgathering" and Margaret's exhibition "Soft Slow." We're excited to hear what connections are coming up for you! Both exhibitions are on view through March 8. Stay tuned for details on a closing reception.
