🎄 CHRISTMAS SPECIAL:
Join me for an Artist Talk followed by a seasonal nibble.

Structures en dérive / Unraveling Structures

🕓 Sunday, December 21
16.00h. to 18.00h.
(Costs: entrance fee)

📍 Fondation Fernet-Branca
2 rue du Ballon, Saint-Louis FR

Mariejon de Jong-Buijs’ work draws on the Dutch landscape tradition—shaped by her youth on farms and a study of the genre’s history. Her large canvases use saturated colors, geometric forms, repeating motifs, and folded surfaces to explore abstraction and geometric minimalism, inviting viewers to experience landscape as a process of perception and memory.

At Fondation Fernet-Branca, she presented iEXIST for the first time: a photographic installation of 730 images that translates the themes of process and perception from her painting into a new medium.

iExist is a recurring project restarted every two years. Each morning, she photographs the view from her bedroom window with her smartphone, creating a daily visual diary of fleeting connections to the world outside.

Without selfies, the images meditate on presence, time, existence, memory, and the impact of technology on identity, inviting reflection on both the artist’s life and that of the viewer.

💡 Why are Barns painted red?

* The real reason: iron oxide (ferrous oxide, rust) was the cheapest pigment available to 1800s American farmers.
* How they made it: mixed iron oxide with linseed oil + milk or buttermilk for a durable wood preservative paint.
* The myth: red barns to attract dying-star light, scare away witches, or bull-related folklore. None are the actual origin.
* Why it lasted: tradition + the paint still works + cultural symbolism of the heartland.

💦 Documenting large-scale paintings during a heat wave is no joke, but my cutest studio assistant and I never stop. After all the hard work, we enjoyed a well-deserved cool-down with yoghurt ice cream.

📍 A new direction within the series: Imaginary Landscapes

Imaginary Landscapes (Unknown Fields 01)
180 × 90 cm. 2026
Underpainting and acrylic on cotton

In this series, I move away from specific locations and work from an imagined terrain—shaped by memories, but no longer tied to a fixed place. These landscapes emerge somewhere between observation and imagination, where the familiar begins to fade.

A first trace of a landscape that does not fully exist—for now.

🚜 Very pleased that my folded painting Nr. 01. (2015) has found a permanent home.

During the making, the tractor becomes an extension of my brush. The painting emerges through continuous observation and action.
The process is central to the work: time, place, and environment leave marks on the cotton. The piece becomes a documentation of a physically experienced reality. It captures a moment and folds it into a portable “time capsule” that can be unfolded anywhere, at any time.
