Watch our short documentary featuring Megan Harrison’s exhibition, “From Your Brow Rise Leaf and Lyre”. Link in our bio for the full length film on our Vimeo Channel 🎥💖✨ As seen in this excerpt, Megan’s installation included “I Held in My Hands the Moon”, a 5” x 5” ink and watercolor on paper artwork currently on view in “Mama | Madre | Mother” at the McNay Art Museum @mcnayart

“From Your Brow Rise Leaf and Lyre” was view in Spring 2022 at The Contemporary at Blue Star @sacontemporary

From the Artist: Transformed by the trauma of losing my son, born still in February 2020, and the profound sense of relief and joy with the healthy birth of a daughter two years later, my work creates space for love and sorrow, trauma and awe, to exist side by side. As my world contracted through grief and pandemic isolation, I created work for private contemplation, to be opened or held in quiet places. The making of these personal altar pieces and cherished objects can be interpreted as spiritual acts, expressions of healing and longing, and a practice of prayer to the most profound experiences of life. by @m.harrison.us

We had the pleasure of hosting San Antonio artist Megan Harrison for two weeks at Ramona Residency as she found time and space to slow down her practice and work with clay from her backyard, while contemplating recent photographs and paintings created from an artist residency earlier this summer.

Ramona Residency creates opportunities to amplify the voices and creative practices of artist mothers. We do this by providing a free life/work space, childcare/material stipend, curator visits, a public open studio, and flexible timing for the residency, all in an effort to best support the life work balance of artist mothers and their families.

Please consider making a tax deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor @freshartsorg to carry our work forward. Donation link in our bio.

Stay tuned for details about our third artist next week.

I’m spending the end of my summer at the @ramonaresidency in Houston exploring memory and community through wild clay and inherited objects. (Generally speaking, I’m making a lot of messes.) Thank you to @sarahsudhoff for making it all possible!

If you are in Houston this weekend please stop by for the open studio and say hello.

Images from my time at @residencianautilus on the Island of Lanzarote - one of the most unearthly and dramatically beautiful places I have ever visited. The effects of this island will unfold over a lifetime. A million thank-yous to all the people who took care of me and my family, who let me make a huge mess in the studio and made me feel supported at every moment. I hate that we had to say goodbye! We will find our way back there someday. by @m.harrison.us

The exhibition, The Visit, speaks to experiences surrounding the death of a loved one, how we tend to their body and how we process the objects and ephemera that remain. This installation evokes past generations, asks how we take our place among them and how we can honor the process of unfurling and dissolving histories.

Gallery100 at Palo Alto College was split into two worlds in an attempt to reconcile the many opposites that unfold after death and to process the notion of temporal existence - the before and after that awaits us all. Through my art I try to exert control over that process, to reverse time - or to pause it, to rebuild a world with memories, to bargain with the universe, to speak to the dead.

On the right side of the gallery a living room, constructed out of ink stained paper, is populated by objects inherited from past generations and artworks made in the wake of loss. Because objects can move through time in a way we cannot, they become powerful relics following the death of a loved one. Towards these objects, heaped with such symbolism like flowers before an altar, we can continue to direct our love, which would otherwise be set adrift on an ocean of grief.

On the left side of the gallery an excavation site/studio space stretches out. Brightly lit and ever evolving, this set of dynamic forms and raw materials stands in direct contrast to the dim, static and orderly living room that waits on the opposite side of a thin paper wall.

The left side of the gallery changed over the course of the exhibition as I processed clay dug from my own backyard and created small sculptures to fill the space. The act of creating forms from the earth found beneath my feet is a rebellion of sorts against the notion of death, and honors the universes we create for others and that are created for us by those who we love so much.

Hello Friends! I have an exhibit at Gallery 100 on the Palo Alto Campus. I have split the gallery in half, using one side as a studio where I am processing clay that I have dug up from around my home. Come by if you want to see the big mess I've made in this beautiful space! I would love to visit. taken in Palo Alto College by @m.harrison.us

I’m so sad to share that last month my mom passed away. She was the definition of living life out loud. Her death always seemed like a physical impossibility. While I will be wrapping my mind around her absence for a very long time, I wanted to share because so many of my friends new her well! We had many adventures together. When she wasn’t causing trouble, she put a lot of energy into trying to leave this world better than she found it. Be generous, be curious, be kind, love with your whole heart, do your part, be yourself. She is so instantly and profoundly missed. by @m.harrison.us
