Meet Markus! The creative mind that shapes the vision behind M2 Design Lab. As founder of the Chicago based studio, Markus plays a pivotal role in guiding the firm's creative direction and ensuring every project reflects the studio's philosophy: interiors that are bold, layered, and deeply personal. Working alongside the team, he helps shape the studio environment into a place where ideas are explored, materials are studied, and every design decision is approached with intention.

At M2 Design Lab, Markus contributes to a design process that prioritizes collaboration, experimentation, and a strong point of view. The studio is known for crafting expressive interiors that blend modern sophistication with warmth, texture, and color. Spaces that feel curated rather than decorated. From early concepts to the final installation, Markus helps ensure each project reflects the studio's commitment to thoughtful design, refined details, and environments that feel both elevated and livable.

What truly defines Markus is his calm, grounded presence and his ability to bring balance to the creative process. His personality blends curiosity, creativity, and careful attention to detail, helping guide projects in a way that feels both ambitious and approachable. Within the culture of M2 Design Lab, Markus helps foster a studio ethos centered on creativity, authenticity, and designing spaces that genuinely improve how people experience their homes. taken in M2 Design Lab by @m2_designlab

I am thrilled to share that M2 Design Lab and our Water Street project have been selected to be included in /be-spōk/, a luxury coffee table book celebrating 30 visionary interior designers from around the world.

/be-spōk/ stands as a testament to the enduring power of design, where each project is more than a room - it's a narrative of life, art, and elegance. Thank you to @bentonbuckleybooks for including me in this incredible group of designers. (Link in bio to purchase)

Style is a preference. Scale is the thing that actually makes a room work.

A perfectly styled room still feels off if the furniture is the wrong size for the space. A sofa too small floats in the middle of nowhere. A light fixture too big overwhelms the ceiling. Get proportion right first — everything else is easier to fix.

A bathroom isn't just function. It's where your day actually starts.

Bold geometric wallpaper in green and gold. Brass fixtures that catch the light from every angle. Walnut cabinetry with enough drawers to make organization effortless. Even the mirrors are placed to reflect the shower tile, turning every glance into a moment.

Buying your whole room from one place? Absolutely not.

Buying an entire room from a single catalog feels easy, but it almost always reads that way too. The best spaces mix sources — vintage finds, custom pieces, a few splurges layered with things that are more accessible. That mix is what makes a room feel collected instead of ordered.

Convenience isn't the same as good design.

Things you look right past, but are done intentionally. ⭐

Everything is intentional. Even the things you never noticed.

Today's Hot Take: luxury doesn't mean expensive.

A $10,000 sofa in the wrong room still looks cheap. The right proportion, the right finish, the right placement — that's what actually reads as luxury. Price tag has nothing to do with it.

You can feel expensive without spending like it.

We're headed to High Point Market later this month, and Theodore Alexander is at the top of our list to visit.

What stands out most is how consistent their quality is across the board. Every piece comes out of their own factory-owned facilities, which is rare in an industry where so much gets outsourced. Thirty years in, that kind of control over craftsmanship still shows.

Excited to see it all in person soon!

We're headed to High Point Market later this month, and Schönbek is one of the stops we're most excited about.

Getting to see over 150 years of crystal craftsmanship in person is something photos just can't capture. The way the light actually hits each cut, the scale of a piece in a real room, the weight and detail you only notice up close.

We can't wait to see it in person at their showroom!

Unfiltered with Marcus: the vendor secrets nobody talks about.

Not every fabricator is created equal. Not every "in stock" material actually ships on time. The relationships behind a project matter as much as the design decisions. This means knowing who to call, who to trust, and who quietly saves a timeline when something goes wrong.

Good design isn't just taste. It's knowing the industry well enough to get it built right.
