In 2015, at the age of 25, I headed the first dedicated video analysis department in the Russian Premier League.

The idea behind creating such a department was simple: to gain the smallest possible competitive edge. How much are you willing to invest for three extra points at the end of the season? One point? Half a point?

Sometimes half a point in a European league can decide who qualifies for the Champions League — and with it comes UEFA prize money, increased sponsorship value, and long-term financial growth.

A few years later, every club in the Russian Premier League had a video analysis department. In a competitive environment, best practices are copied immediately.

Before that, most clubs relied on a single coach, analyst, cameraman, or a member of the technical staff who handled analysis alongside other duties.

This is largely how A-League clubs operate today 🇦🇺

I think that it is dictated by the cost of a point.
Why invest in something if the return is smaller than the investment?

Is an analytics department a must in professional football clubs? by @m777ax

PASSING PATTERN 2️⃣ | READ THE MOVEMENT ⚽️ by Jonatan Germano @shonygermano 🇦🇷

This progression adds a decision for both the top player and the N6.

The top player starts behind the mannequin and has the freedom to open on either side.

➡️ Move left or right from behind the mannequin
➡️ N6 has to scan and identify the movement
➡️ Adjust the body position
➡️ Play the pass into the correct side
➡️ Continue the sequence

The important detail is that the movement is not predetermined.

The top player chooses where to open, and N6 has to recognise the cue and react with the right pass.

That changes the exercise from a fixed passing pattern into a simple perception-action task.

Scan → identify the movement → adjust → play.

A small progression, but an important one: the player on the ball is no longer just repeating a pass — he has to read information before making the decision.

PASSING PATTERN 1️⃣ | OPPOSITE SIDE ⚽️ by Jonatan Germano @shonygermano

Same passing pattern, now performed from the other side with the final action finished using the left foot.

The sequence:

➡️ Play short into N8
➡️ N8 sets the ball
➡️ Play through into N9
➡️ N9 sets for the second N8
➡️ Play through again
➡️ Finish into the mini-goal with the left foot

After the final pass, the second N8 collects the ball from the mini-goal and dribbles it back towards the starting position, keeping the exercise flowing continuously.

The rhythm stays the same:

Pass → set → play through → set → play through → finish → recover the ball.

Changing the side of the mini-goals allows the players to repeat the same positional movements while working more on the opposite foot.

A simple detail that keeps the technical repetition balanced on both sides.

PASSING PATTERN 1️⃣ | SET & PLAY THROUGH ⚽️ by Jonatan Germano @shonygermano 😍

A simple passing pattern built around third-man combinations and vertical play.

The sequence:

➡️ Play short into N8
➡️ N8 sets the ball
➡️ Play through into N9
➡️ N9 sets for the second N8
➡️ Play through again
➡️ Finish into the mini-goal

The key is the rhythm of the combination:

Pass → set → play through → set → play through → finish.

The players are constantly working on:

➡️ Timing of movement
➡️ Quality of the set
➡️ Body position before receiving
➡️ Weight of pass
➡️ Playing forward after the lay-off

After 2–3 minutes of repetition, the position of the mini-goals changes so the same pattern can be performed on the opposite side and with the other foot.

A simple way to get a high volume of technical repetitions while keeping the actions connected to realistic positional movements.

GK FOOTWORK | PLAY THROUGH THE PRESS ⚽️🧤

A goalkeeper footwork pattern with Tom Fawdry, using a simple build-up picture @tomfawdry86

The two goalkeepers represent the centre-backs, while the coach in the middle represents the N6.

The sequence:

➡️ Pass into N6
➡️ N6 sets the ball
➡️ Play through to skip the line
➡️ One-two with the left centre-back
➡️ One-two with the right centre-back
➡️ Reconnect with N6 and start again

GK is constantly adjusting his position, opening his body and preparing the next action before the ball arrives.

The pattern recreates a common build-up situation:

Find N6 → use the set → break the line → combine with the CBs → reconnect inside.

A simple way to work on goalkeeper footwork, passing quality, body orientation and rhythm in possession.

BACK 4 DEFENDING | STAY CONNECTED ⚽️ at Brisbane Roar 🟠⚫️ @brisbaneroarfc under Michael Valkanis @michael.valkanis_official

A 6v4 numerical disadvantage looks difficult for the defending team.

But if the back four is organised, connected and moves as one unit, the attackers can still find it extremely difficult to create goal scoring opportunities.

This practice designed by Iacopo La Rocca @iacopolarocca and Tom Fawdry @tomfawdry86 focuses on some of the basic principles of defending as a back four

➡️ When can the fullback jump?

If the fullback already has a direct opponent occupying the wide area, he cannot simply leave the line to press inside

➡️ What happens when a centre-back jumps?

The other three defenders immediately squeeze in behind him.

The objective is to close the space he leaves, protect the central channel and block the next passing lane.

➡️ What happens when a fullback jumps?

The rest of the line shuffles across together.

The important principle is that one defender’s movement creates a reaction from everyone else.

CB jumps → line squeezes
FB jumps → line shifts

Defending is not four individual 1v1 situations. It is four players solving the same problem collectively.

And this is also why a well-organised back four can often deal comfortably with a 6v4 numerical disadvantage.

The attacking team may have two extra players, but if the defensive line stays compact, protects the dangerous spaces and moves together, those extra numbers become much harder to exploit.

Numbers create the advantage. Organisation decides whether you can use it.

5v2 TRANSITIONAL RONDO ⚽️ at Brisbane Roar @brisbaneroarfc 🟠⚫️ by Michael Valkanis @michael.valkanis_official and Iacopo La Rocca @iacopolarocca

Two teams of 5 players working in two separate areas.

One team keeps possession with a maximum of 2 touches, while only 2 players from the opposition are allowed to enter the area and press.

➡️ 5v2 possession
➡️ Maximum 2 touches
➡️ Only 2 defenders can press
➡️ Win the ball → immediately look to switch play

If the two pressing players win possession, they have to connect with their other three teammates by switching the ball into the opposite area.

So the action becomes:

Press → regain → find the switch → connect with teammates → keep possession.

A simple rondo that combines possession, pressing, transition and the ability to recognise the first action after winning the ball.

MD-1 POST-SESSION EXTRAS ⚽️ at Brisbane Roar @brisbaneroarfc under Michael Valkanis @michael.valkanis_official

A simple finishing competition at the end of the session with Tom Fawdry @tomfawdry86

Tom plays a hard ball from behind the goal into the attacking player.

The player has only 2 touches:

➡️ First touch — control the ball inside the D
➡️ Second touch — finish from inside the D

And the rule is simple:

You score — you stay like Nathan @nathan.amanatidis 👏
You miss — you’re off to the changing room 😅 @noah_maieroni

No extra touches. No second chance.

A simple way to add pressure, competition and finishing quality at the end of an MD-1 session.

9v9 → CONSTANTLY REFRESHED 9v2 RONDO ⚽️ designed by Jonatan Germano @shonygermano and Shane Rexhepi @iam_rexi

A possession game designed to keep the intensity of the press high throughout the drill.

Two teams of 9 players start approximately 8 metres apart.

One team keeps possession inside an 8x8m area, while only 2 opposition players are allowed to enter and press.

➡️ 9 players keep possession
➡️ 2 defenders press at maximum intensity
➡️ 10 consecutive passes = 1 point
➡️ After 10 passes, two fresh defenders immediately sprint in
➡️ If the defenders win the ball, the possession team starts a new sequence against two fresh pressers

The possession does not switch every time the defenders regain the ball. This allows the possession team to repeatedly solve the same problem while the defending team constantly introduces fresh pressure.

Fresh pressure → quick circulation → scan → play under pressure → repeat

After 2 minutes, the teams switch roles.

Every 10 consecutive passes counts as a point, so at the end there are clear winners and losers.

2v1 + 1 → 3v2 | VILLARREAL TRANSITION DRILL ⚽️ at Brisbane Roar @brisbaneroarfc 🟠⚫️ by Michael Valkanis @michael.valkanis_official and Iacopo La Rocca @iacopolarocca

A classic transition practice performed by the Brisbane Roar First Team.

Greens attack. Reds defend.

The first action starts as a 2v1, with the second red defender starting from a delayed position.

➡️ Greens attack 2v1
➡️ The delayed defender recovers
➡️ If the attack is not quick enough, the situation becomes 2v2

As soon as the first action finishes, the same two red defenders immediately become attackers.

They are joined by a teammate and launch a 3v2 counterattack in the opposite direction.

So the players have to switch mentality instantly:

Defend → regain/recover → attack 3v2

And the transition doesn’t necessarily finish there.

In this example, the Reds lose possession during the 3v2, the Greens counter again and score.

That is what makes the practice so valuable:

2v1 → 2v2 → 3v2 → regain → counter again.

The structure creates the numerical situations, but the game remains alive whenever possession changes.

A brilliant exercise for training speed of attack, recovery runs, numerical advantages and immediate transition after losing or winning the ball.
