Buoyed by their joint endeavour to support each other and the team, tapping into their respective experiences; together they have nurtured MA+Co into the refined studio that stands proud today.

We're excited by reinvention so to be evolving along with our people, projects, and collaborators is an opportunity for new ideas and connections.

The pitched roof and corrugated metal exterior draw from the agricultural structures of the region, with timber and expansive glazing introducing warmth and opening the building to its surrounds.

Red doors and window frames bring an element of joy and contrast to the familiar shed form, adding a considered layer of colour to an otherwise muted material palette.

The project takes the simplicity and practicality of the traditional shed and gives it a contemporary architectural expression.

A quiet expression of rural architecture on the Mornington Peninsula.

A simple pitched form, wrapped in corrugated metal, sits lightly within the landscape. The restrained palette and minimal openings allow the surrounding trees, grasses and changing light to become part of the architecture.

At the centre, a generous opening creates a threshold between inside and out — framing the landscape and strengthening the connection between the house and its rural setting.

A study in simplicity, material restraint and connection to place.

As Melbourne starts densifying and apartment living becomes the norm, we should start critically thinking about what makes a good apartment design.

I think 9 Wilson Ave in Brunswick developed by @openjournal_neometro and designed by @ma_co.au sets a good example for this by designing housing that helps foster healthier cities. Certain standout features here:

🌱 The 9m-wide courtyard, combined with open corridors, enable more opportunities for casual encounters with neighbours, while giving each apartment plenty of light and reducing maintenance costs associated with lighting and heating building corridors

🏪 The ground level frontage is broken down into a few shops now hosting cafes, an office and a hair salon. The size of the tenancies emulate the narrow blocks on Sydney Rd, providing a natural extension of the activated streetscape around the corner towards Wilson Ave

🚴 The apartment provides limited on-site parking, with on-street EV chargers and undercover bike parking provided instead, encouraging people to walk, cycle or use public transport

Apartment living in Australia is slowly taking off, and a lot of people don’t know what a good precedent is. This building, Nine Wilson Avenue, just won the state architecture award for multi residential building. Here are three things to think about:

1. Outdoor corridors and staircases encourage way more social interaction and reduce the need to aircon a building

2. The ground floor has small workplaces and little shops, meaning theoretically no one needs to get in a car which means more homes don’t translate into traffic.

And 3. A good street makes homes more attractive, which in turn creates a sellable home. The building should prioritise a street before it prioritises a form.

Gain an insight into the design journey and the development process, through tours led jointly by MA+Co, and the developer, Neometro, offering two complementary perspectives on the project.

The program provides an opportunity to engage with current housing discussions in Melbourne and understand how Nine Wilson Avenue responds to economic, regulatory and social challenges shaping contemporary apartment living.

Featured in the latest edition of Architect Victoria, Inkerman + Nelson forms part of the Density Done Well discussion.

The project explores a model for medium-density housing that prioritises generous shared spaces, strong connections to the street and enduring materials—demonstrating that increased density can enhance neighbourhood character and liveability rather than compromise it.

We're delighted to announce the appointment of Ciaran Snooks as an Associate at MA+Co.

Over the past five years, Ciaran has become an integral part of our studio, bringing rigour and a collaborative approach to every project while making a valued contribution to our studio culture. He played a significant role in the delivery of 9 Wilson Avenue, Brunswick. Alongside practice, Ciaran tutors at Monash University, where his passion for design and architectural education continues to inform his work at MA+Co.

We are honoured to receive the Best Overend Award for Residential Architecture -Multiple Housing at the 2026 Victorian Architecture Awards for 9 Wilson Avenue, Brunswick.

Thank you to our long-time collaborators Neometro for their ongoing support, trust and commitment to delivering thoughtful, enduring housing.
