PROJECT TITLE
Lamp
(Redevelopment of the former Cinema Corso into a new contemporary art incubator)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The redevelopment of the former Cinema Corso into a new contemporary art incubator is grounded in the concept of permeability: the building departs from its original nature as an hermetic container to become a relational device, intertwining creative production with the public space of the city. The intervention preserves the historical memory of the main facade on Corso Fogazzaro, concentrating transformation on the western elevation along Stradella del Garofolino. The design responds to the hollowed-out original auditorium by inserting a double-height opalescent volume: a suspended urban lantern that diffuses soft, zenithal light into the large hall below. An integrated circular technical grid ensures complete spatial and exhibition flexibility. The massing of the existing structure retains a heavy, mineral presence. On the western cylindrical wall, a horizontal cut creates an urban window protected by sliding metal mesh gates—a dynamic threshold allowing artistic activities to glance outward and temporarily spill into the street. Internally, a vertical circulation core organizes the space between the double-height foyer and the main hall with its high clearance. A continuous visual axis pierces through the entire building, connecting the street, the exhibition hall, and the urban square to the west. Through a few precise syntactical gestures, the former cinema redefines itself as a place of experimentation and identity for the community: an open, essential, and inclusive scenario where artistic production coincides with urban life.

➕ What does a home look like when it is designed to last for generations? Aires Mateus (@studio_airesmateus) and MA+Co (@ma_co.au) shape Mori House around permanence, restraint, and a deep connection to landscape. Set among tea trees overlooking Port Phillip Bay, courtyards, gardens, and sheltered spaces weave nature into everyday life. Off-form concrete, natural timber, controlled daylight, and a dedicated tatami room create a calm material language informed by Japanese traditions and family rituals. The result is a home designed to evolve with its inhabitants and nurture connection across generations.

They were not asking for a house. They were asking for a place to live. That distinction became the entire project.

Mori House in Mount Martha, Victoria, was designed by Manuel Aires Mateus in collaboration with Melbourne-based MA+Co for Jeff Provan of Neometro and his wife Mariko Mori Provan. The couple had spent years visiting Aires Mateus projects before finally reaching him on their last night in Lisbon, spending an hour together discussing a brief that referenced off-form concrete, bicycles, books, Yayoi Kusama, Carlo Scarpa, Tadao Ando, and Luis Barragán. Before breaking ground, the architect stayed with the Provans at their old beach house, visiting the site each morning to sketch, watch the sun, and understand the land.

The resulting form is in-situ poured concrete, arranged as a series of protective pavilions around courtyards: pool, garden, olive grove, chicken run. Deep eaves, a rooftop belvedere with ocean views, a cruciform framework at the heart of the plan drawing on Ancient Rome. No room wider than 4.2 metres, a constraint Aires Mateus held firm on, one that brought an intimacy to a building that is, in fact, large. A tatami room, communal spaces, bedrooms, and two self-contained guest suites that mirror the primary geometry from a distance.

Brutalist in its concrete and monolithic in expression. Casual and welcoming in the way it is lived in.

We tend to understand things once their outcomes appear settled: a work is finalised, a building completed, a space assigned a use. Once their outlines are clear, order seems to follow.

Yet unforeseen conditions inevitably intervene in both creative practice and life, making taking shape an ongoing process rather than a finished state.

We often imagine that creative freedom depends on ample time, full control over materials and greater latitude within the rules. In reality, form never arises on its own.

Materials, the body, the environment and the intentions of others all help define the context in which it takes shape; through repeated trade-offs, things begin to acquire their contours.

Constraints do not necessarily produce better outcomes, but they clarify what remains open to change and what must be worked with.

Years of projects, relationships and a portfolio we’re incredibly proud of.

What started as a little side project almost five years ago has grown into something pretty special.

Over the years, we’ve slowly gathered, documented and compiled the incredible multi-residential projects that @streamline_products and Arcisan have been fortunate enough to be part of. From established developments completed several years ago through to some of our most recent projects, our Multi-Residential Portfolio has become a wonderful snapshot of just how far our products — and our relationships — have travelled.

Across Melbourne and throughout Australia, it’s incredibly rewarding to look back and see Arcisan specified across such a diverse collection of developments.

More than anything, this portfolio represents relationships.

We’re extremely proud — and genuinely humbled — to work alongside so many talented architectural and interior design practices, developers, builders and our commercial partners. Many of these relationships have been built over years, and seeing a project progress from those early specification conversations through to completion never gets old.

And multi-residential is only one part of the story.

We’ve now built a growing library of project portfolios across a range of sectors, allowing us to tailor what we share depending on the work you and your studio are doing.

Working on something new?

Send us an email and let us know what sector you’re working in. Chances are, we have a portfolio of relevant projects, products and applications we’d love to share with you.

A lot of work has gone into building this library — and we’re very proud to finally see it all come together.

Thoughtfully specified to support the overall design intent. Products sit quietly within the space, adding function, finish and detail to a beautifully resolved project.

This concrete house is a slice of Japan in Australia 🎋

Set among established tea trees overlooking Port Phillip Bay, @morihouse_mountmartha is a study in how little a home sometimes needs to say. Designed by @_airesmateus with @ma_co.au, the 365-square-meter residence is made from a series of concrete volumes, courtyards, framed views, and carefully placed openings.

The Japanese reference is more about atmosphere than imitation. Gravel paths, clipped trees, timber-lined rooms, paper lanterns, and a choreography of thresholds create a sense of calm that feels very far from the usual idea of an Australian beach house. Instead of opening everything at once, the house reveals itself gradually, moving from garden to concrete passage, from stair to courtyard, and finally towards the bay.

Notably, the concrete gives the house its weight, while the planting, pale timber, warm furniture, and changing coastal light keep it porous and lived-in. Conceived as a place for multiple generations to gather, Mori House is designed to be weathered, inhabited, and passed on over time.
