There’s a lot to scream about…..
Grateful for the opportunity to keep developing WOWEO this month through a residency with Hatch Arts Collective and team at Inter-! PGH friends, look forward to seeing you ❤️

Set in a karaoke-funeral-lounge, WITH OURSELVES, WITH EACH OTHER (WOWEO) is an evening-length solo performance in the round. Creator-performer Maree ReMalia steps into the work as a Korean adoptee and ballerina-turned-experimental dance-maker, using dance, text, and pop music to grieve a parent who raised her and a parent she never met. Drawing from karaoke’s spectacle, the ceremonial weight of funerals, and the intimacy of a neighborhood lounge, ReMalia explores how a solo body can become a meeting place for others and how a mic becomes a lifeline—to sing, whisper, scream, and wail her way through the beautiful mess of being alive. WOWEO asks how we grieve, heal, and celebrate against all odds.

WOWEO is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation & Development Fund Project co-commissioned by Kelly Strayhorn Theater (KST), Bates Dance Festival (BDF), Hatch Arts Collective (Hatch), and the National Performance Network (NPN). The world premiere is co-presented by KST and Hatch; the project is co-directed by Adil Mansoor and produced by and created with Hatch.

WOWEO premieres at @kstheater October 23-24, 2026 and is touring to Bates Dance Festival (ME), Cosmos Theater (AZ), and Cleveland Public Theatre 2027-2028.

Seeds of WOWEO surfaced at Hatch’s River Mountain Retreat in 2022. In 2024, thanks to the extraordinary @adilman @hatch.arts.collective, the work officially began taking shape in Hatch’s Nest Residency at @inter_pgh. What started with vocal experiments, writing, movement, & explorations of grief & joy has grown into a multidisciplinary performance weaving remembrance of my father, adoption and the complexities of early separation, alongside humor & celebration. We’re 8 days from our premiere with lead presenter - longstanding and beloved @josephdanielhall @kstheater and I’m feeling immense gratitude for the journey that has brought us here: 4 residencies & in-process showings across PGH & NYC, community events, support of Hatch, KST, @centerfornewwork @nefa_1976 @npnarts & the incredible artists, collaborators, presenters, & audiences who have nurtured this work. As the project has grown, so has the team around it, with longtime collaborators & new creative partners each bringing their artistry, perspectives, and care to the process. I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported the work as I’ve ventured into singing, storytelling, & solo performance—new and often scary territory. WOWEO holds many things at once: grief & joy, longing & connection, remembrance & possibility. I’m excited to share what we’ve made with you❤️

Were you at the Community Dinner with artist Maree ReMalia @ma_ma_lia last Monday? 🥰

Next Friday and Saturday, October 23–24, we’ll welcome the world premiere of WITH OURSELVES, WITH EACH OTHER (WOWEO) at KST. At last Monday’s dinner, Maree shared how the work came together, and we had a chance to dive deeper into some of the themes behind WOWEO with Kelly Hughes, Founder & Executive Director of Foster Love Project @fosterloveproject. Lots to reflect on arts as a healing tool, adoption experience, foster care, and how we can all contribute to a community of care.

💐So many of the artists who helped bring WOWEO to life were also there! @hatch.arts.collective

So grateful ✨

• Repost @nefa_1976

With National Dance Project support, these 30 projects (post 2/2) will tour. Congratulations to all of the recipients and the finalists!

NDP Advisors selected these projects from a competitive pool of 280 applicants from 34 states, as well as Washington, D.C. and Guam.
Throughout the entire process, NDP Advisors remained grounded in the program criteria while uplifting representation across traditional and new dance forms and aesthetics, rigorous study/research, earnest storytelling, and commitments to community mobilization. It is because of their diligent work and care that we have a diverse cohort of grantees and finalists that reflect and strengthen the cultural and aesthetic diversities of today’s dance field.

STORY BALLET collaborator highlight!

slowdanger has had the pleasure of being performers in Maree’s work, and have looked up to her for many years. It is with great pleasure that we can work alongside Maree ReMalia in STORY BALLET!

Maree ReMalia is a Tulsa-based dance maker, performer, and teaching artist. She is grateful for her longstanding relationship with slowdanger and the opportunity to work alongside the creative team of STORY BALLET. A Korean adoptee born in South Korea and raised in Ohio, she explores the moving body as a site of memory, presence, and possibility, bringing personal histories into conversation with the forces that shape our lives.

Produced by Hatch Arts Collective, her forthcoming solo WITH OURSELVES, WITH EACH OTHER is supported by a National Dance Project Production Grant and the National Performance Network Creation and Development Fund co-commissioned by Kelly Strayhorn Theater, Bates Dance Festival, Hatch, and NPN. Recently, she collaborated with Kate Green and Richard Zimmerman on a Tulsa Artist Fellowship-supported project in which 19 performers activated Zimmerman’s public art installation, Assembly. Her choreographic works have been presented at venues including Cleveland Public Theatre, Dance Place, Daegu International Dance Festival, Gibney DoublePlus Festival, Movement Research at the Judson Church, and NYLA Live Artery Festival.

Maree is cast in Lida Winfield’s Moving Dialogue Project. She has performed in work by Heidee Lyn Alsdorf, Alicia Chesser and Steve Liggett, Ari Christopher, Bebe Miller, Gabriel Forestieri, Christopher Williams, Noa Zuk, and was a member of MorrisonDance and STAYCEE PEARL dance project. From 2015–2017, she served as the Andrew W. Mellon Interdisciplinary Choreographer for Middlebury College’s Movement Matters Residency. She has taught with Bates Dance Festival, Brown University, Dreams of Hope Queer Youth Arts, Inverse Performance Art Festival, Point Park University, and University of Wisconsin. She earned her MFA from The Ohio State University.

While some artists reflect on the past and others imagine the future, the most exciting work coming to stages, screens, and less traditional venues this season is undeniably grounded in our shared present. Head to the link in our bio to learn more. 🌟
