Adding calcium to a pool is important because it helps maintain water balance and protects your pool surfaces and equipment. Specifically, you’re adding calcium hardness, which refers to the amount of dissolved calcium in the water.

Why It’s Important:

1. Prevents Corrosion
	•	If calcium hardness is too low, the water becomes “soft” and aggressive.
	•	This can cause it to leach calcium from pool plaster, tile grout, or metal equipment, leading to surface damage and corrosion.

2. Prevents Etching of Pool Surfaces
	•	In plaster or concrete pools, low calcium can etch and deteriorate the surface, making it rough and more prone to algae growth.

3. Helps Maintain Proper Water Balance
	•	Calcium is a key part of total water hardness, which works with pH and alkalinity to maintain Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) — the measure of whether water is balanced, corrosive, or scale-forming.

4. Reduces Metal Staining
	•	Balanced calcium hardness can reduce staining from metals like copper or iron, which might otherwise react with imbalanced water.

⸻

Ideal Calcium Hardness Levels:
	•	Plaster/concrete pools: 200–400 ppm
	•	Vinyl/fiberglass pools: 175–300 ppm

If levels drop too low, adding calcium chloride is the typical fix.

You need to add sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to your pool mainly to raise total alkalinity (TA) and help stabilize your pH.

Here’s why it matters:
	1.	Maintains Water Balance
	•	Total alkalinity acts like a “pH buffer” — it keeps your pool’s pH from swinging up and down wildly.
	•	If TA is too low, pH can drop suddenly, making the water acidic and corrosive.
	2.	Protects Surfaces & Equipment
	•	Low alkalinity water can corrode metal parts, etch plaster, and damage vinyl liners.
	•	By raising TA, sodium bicarbonate helps prevent this damage.
	3.	Keeps Swimmers Comfortable
	•	Low alkalinity can lead to eye and skin irritation due to pH instability.
	•	Stable water chemistry is easier on swimmers.
	4.	Gentle, Targeted Adjustment
	•	Sodium bicarbonate raises alkalinity without spiking pH too much — unlike soda ash, which raises both alkalinity and pH quickly.

💡 Typical target TA range: 80–120 ppm (most pools)
💡 If TA is below ~70 ppm, your pH can start “crashing,” and that’s when baking soda becomes your pool’s best friend. If you keep a lower Alkalinity, make sure to raise the Calcium level to offset (TA) and be in LSI range

You need to add stabilizer (also called cyanuric acid, or CYA) to your pool to protect the chlorine from being destroyed by sunlight.

Here’s why it’s important:

☀️ 1. UV rays destroy chlorine
	•	When chlorine (like liquid chlorine or bleach) is added to your pool, sunlight breaks it down quickly — up to 90% of your chlorine can be gone in just a few hours on a sunny day.
	•	Stabilizer acts like sunscreen for chlorine, slowing this breakdown.

🛡️ 2. Helps chlorine last longer
	•	With the right CYA level (usually 30–50 ppm for non-salt pools, 60–80 ppm for saltwater pools), chlorine stays in the water longer and works more effectively.
	•	That means you use less chlorine over time, saving money and effort.

⚖️ 3. Too much stabilizer is bad
	•	If stabilizer levels get too high (usually over 100 ppm), it can actually lock up the chlorine, making it less effective at sanitizing.
	•	This is called chlorine lock and can lead to cloudy water or algae, even if chlorine levels seem normal.
Quick Tips:
	•	Always test your CYA levels before adding more.
	•	Add stabilizer slowly and carefully, ideally in a sock in the skimmer or directly into the skimmer per label instructions.
	•	Don’t overdo it—more isn’t better when it comes to CYA.
Another tip:
✅The 7.5% Rule:
The rule of thumb is:

Free chlorine (FC) should be at least 7.5% of your stabilizer (CYA) level.

But this is often misunderstood — so let’s clear it up:

🔁 What it actually means:

The stabilizer level (CYA) determines how much free chlorine you need to maintain in your pool.
For example: CYA Level
Minimum Free Chlorine (7.5%)
30 ppm cya.
2.25 ppm chlorine needed.
50 ppm
3.75 ppm

80 ppm
6 ppm

So, you don’t need to make stabilizer 7.5% of chlorine — it’s the other way around:
	•	You adjust your chlorine level based on your CYA.
	•	The higher the stabilizer, the more free chlorine you need to sanitize effectively.

⸻

❗Why this matters:
If you don’t maintain the 7.5% ratio:
	•	Algae can grow even if chlorine seems “normal.”
	•	You may get chlorine lock or false readings.

Adding enzymes to your pool offers several benefits that help keep the water clean, reduce maintenance, and improve the effectiveness of other chemicals. Here’s why enzymes are useful in pool care:

🧪 What Are Pool Enzymes?

Enzymes are natural or synthetic proteins that break down organic matter in your pool water—things like body oils, lotions, sunscreen, sweat, and pollen. They help prevent buildup before it turns into scum, cloudy water, or algae food.
✅ Benefits of Using Enzymes in a Pool:

🧼 1. Break Down Organic Waste
	•	Enzymes digest oils, grease, sweat, cosmetics, and other organic contaminants.
	•	This reduces scum lines along the tile and surface gunk in skimmers.

💧 2. Clearer Water
	•	With fewer contaminants floating around, your water stays crystal clear.
	•	Enzymes help reduce water cloudiness caused by organic waste.

🧴 3. Reduces Chemical Demand
	•	By breaking down waste, enzymes reduce the amount of chlorine needed to sanitize the pool.
	•	Less chlorine = lower cost and fewer strong chemical odors.

🦠 4. Helps Prevent Algae Growth
	•	Organic waste is food for algae. By eliminating it, enzymes make it harder for algae to bloom.

🧽 5. Keeps Filters Cleaner
	•	Enzymes reduce the sticky oils and gunk that clog up filters.
	•	This improves filtration efficiency and extends filter life.

🧹 6. Cuts Down Maintenance
	•	Less scrubbing, vacuuming, and tile-line cleaning.
	•	You spend more time enjoying the pool and less time maintaining it.

🌿 7. Eco-Friendly Water Balance
	•	Enzymes are biodegradable and gentle on swimmers.
	•	Good for people with sensitive skin or allergies to harsh chemicals.

⸻

🔄 When to Use Pool Enzymes:
	•	Weekly during swim season for best results.
	•	After heavy pool use (parties, storms).
	•	When opening or closing the pool.
	•	In pools with lots of swimmers, trees nearby, or sunscreen use.
🧪 Tip:

Use high-quality commercial enzyme products specifically formulated for pools (like Natural Chemistry Pool Perfect, Orenda CV-600, etc.)—they’re concentrated and safe for regular use.

Phosphates in pool water are a common issue pool owners hear about, so here’s a clear breakdown for you:

What they are:
Phosphates are compounds of phosphorus (often from leaves, fertilizers, dirt, soaps, or even swimmer waste) that end up in your pool.

Why they matter:
	•	Algae food: Phosphates don’t directly harm swimmers, but they act as a nutrient that feeds algae. High phosphate levels can make it much easier for algae to grow, especially if chlorine levels drop.
	•	Chlorine demand: When algae start growing due to phosphates, your pool uses up chlorine much faster trying to kill it.

How they get in:
	•	Rainwater or runoff carrying fertilizers or dirt
	•	Leaves, grass clippings, and other organic debris
	•	Swimmers (lotions, soaps, sweat)
	•	Municipal water supplies

Managing phosphates:
	•	Keep your chlorine levels stable — algae can’t grow if chlorine is maintained, even if phosphates are present.
	•	Regular cleaning — skim leaves, vacuum, brush walls to reduce debris.
	•	Phosphate removers — liquid products (lanthanum-based) can bind phosphates and help lower levels if they’re high.
	•	Filter maintenance — clean cartridges or backwash to keep filters trapping organic matter effectively.

👉 Most pool professionals agree: phosphates don’t cause algae, they just make it easier for algae to bloom when chlorine is low. If you keep chlorine balanced, phosphates aren’t usually a big problem. taken in Pembroke Pines, Florida by @ma_pools

Checking salinity reading on panel always press select after selecting chlorine output percentage. If panel reads No Flow, first make sure water is flowing to pool and thru pump at correct speed. Then check the screen for debris. If all good, most likely the tri sensor is bad. You can first clean the debris off the sensor and see if that corrects the issue. If not, replace it.
