Happenings and updates from BCU MAAAEPs at Birmingham School of Art ⚡️

POSTS STORIES REELS

Join us for Flashpoint.

We invite you to celebrate the MA students’ achievements with us at the Private View on Thursday 20 August, 6.00-8.00pm, at Birmingham School of Art.

The exhibition will then be open 11.00am-5.00pm on Friday 21 August, Saturday 22 August, Monday 24 August and Tuesday 25 August.

Flashpoint is a celebration of the diverse talent and creativity of Birmingham School of Art’s 2026 MA student cohort. The exhibition showcases work from four distinct MA courses: @bcu_ma_fineart Arts & Project Management @maaaeps and @maviscombcu

A flashpoint marks a moment of transformation and possibility. It reflects the value of being part of an interdisciplinary community and the developments and discoveries that take place throughout study. It is a moment to look forward, recognising this exhibition as the beginning of new journeys alongside being a celebration of the practices present in the school.

Flashpoint is the culmination of students’ work at Margaret Street, representing an important moment of visibility for a cohort shaped by the rich creative ecology of both the School of Art and the creative ecologies present in the West Midlands. Working across different media and contexts, this exhibition highlights the importance of inhabiting real spaces and a commitment to showcasing working within the world.

As a staff team, we congratulate this cohort and are excited to see how the 2026 cohort’s work thrives and grows in the future, and for them to remain in conversation with us and inform the School of Art in the future. by @maaaeps

Birmingham School of Art Gallery is excited to announce Inexperienced Tresspassers an exhibition conceptualised by artist Francesca Telling @francescatelling , in collaboration with students on the MA Arts and Education Practices @maaaeps programme at Birmingham School of Art.

3rd-24th November
10-4pm Mon-Fri
Free entry to the public

10/11 opening event with refreshments 5-7pm
24/11 Activation by MA Arts and Education Practices Students (Night School) 5.30-8pm

Developed through a series of collaborative dialogues and creative interventions, Inexperienced Trespassers begins with the work of geographer Doreen Massey (1944–2016) and cultural theorist Stuart Hall (1932–2014). Across print, archival materials and audiovisual documents, the resulting exhibition interprets their ideas through visual culture to explore themes of displacement, resistance and belonging today.

With archives based in London and Birmingham respectively, Inexperienced Trespassers presents a new iteration of an ongoing research collaboration between the two cities, working with selected pedagogical and political resources to reconnect Massey & Hall’s legacies. As longstanding friends, colleagues, collaborators and neighbours, Massey & Hall’s work was deeply interdisciplinary and publicly-orientated – inspiring new political imaginations and critical understandings of our entanglements with identity and power in urban contexts. Where their work fostered a curiosity for social justice, pluralism and solidarity, Inexperienced Trespassers reengages this spirit to think together about places, their stories and the present conjunctural crisis.

Taking its title from a comment piece authored by Stuart Hall for Mermaid – the University of Birmingham’s historic student magazine – Inexperienced Trespassers emerges in the context of an academic institution, inviting students, educators and activists to translate Massey & Hall’s ideas into new and collectively shaped narratives.

Co-commissioned by @metrolandcultures in partnership with the @theopenuniversity , with funding from the @theelephanttrust and Antipode Foundation. by @maaaeps

Really lovely last day of term with the MAAAEP’s where we all reflected on their MA show with @ikonyouthprogramme and talked about how the end is really the start of everything. We also got to celebrate course alumni and VT @exoduscrooks successful M4C PhD application through a sharing of how they wrote it and what happens next. Big big congratulations all round, and also to course alumni and VT @______ris who will also be beginning their PhD in Sept at the SoA also. It’s been an epic year, come and see the results at the MA show at @birmingham_school_of_art along with @bcu_ma_fineart PV on the 21st of Aug 6-8pm then 11-5pm on the 22, 23, 26, 27th of Aug. by @maaaeps

Threaded in Nature, Making with Botanical Inks
Ikon x BCU Tuesdays

In our recent workshop inspired by Thread the Loom and Seulgi Lee: SPAN, participants explored natural colour and storytelling through botanical inks. 🌿🫙

Leaves, petals and kitchen leftovers transformed into expressive artworks through hands on mark-making. Together we created a space for slowness, care and creativity, offering a sensory, sustainable alternative to synthetic paints.

‘Weaving Waves’
Ikon x BCU Tuesdays

Inspired by Ikon’s current exhibitions Seulgi Lee: SPAN and Thread the Loom, this creative workshop invited families and young people to explore the art of paper weaving through colour, language, and storytelling.

This workshop offered space for reflection, connection, and playful making. It celebrated how traditions can hold stories and how stories can be rewoven into something entirely new.

Inspired by the multilingual Rosetta Stone, this workshop empowered refugees to create their own alphabets and carve their stories into clay, bridging ancient heritage with modern resilience.

Huge thanks to GAP Asirt DisplacingCollective and the courageous participants who shared their voices. Your stories matter.

Really lovely time on @ikonyouthprogramme’s Slowboat yesterday with @exoduscrooks using clay and water to mediate and prompt open conversation.

Two conversation prompts the MAAEP’s are sharing are:

Who would you be if you could reinvent yourself?
Describe a routine you have?

Big thanks to @ikongallery for sharing Slowboat with us over the summer, really looking forward to seeing where everyone takes their ideas and how they work with IYP. by @maaaeps

Really lovely day of trekking around Walsall and talking about @theartschoolproject at @thenewartgallerywalsall finding the location of Walsall School of Art and thinking about futures, class, scale and access. A number of students and staff on the course live around Walsall and have studied and taught at @walsall_college Art education in Walsall is part of so many lives, the relationship of the college and gallery is also really integral in its ambition and as an ongoing dialogue. It was amazing to be able to share this together. by @maaaeps
