these are the hills I am staying on, try and fight me on it!

1. Your business can look professional and still have personality, so if it’s colourful and a little odd in the best way, your website can be too.

2. I’d rather see your actual space than a perfect stock photo, because I want to recognise the place when I walk through the door because I have enough anxiety walking into new places as it is without wondering am I in the right place.

3. Your words can sound lovely and still tell me what you do, because “a little something for your wellbeing” leaves me wondering whether I’m booking a massage or a Pilates class.

4. Reading your menu on my phone shouldn’t involve downloading a file and zooming in on every line, especially when choosing dinner is already taking me this long.

5. Your website should take something off your plate, and if you’re sending the same booking and payment instructions every evening, that’s a good place to start.

Hi, I’m Matea, and this is the introduction I kept putting off because talking about myself online still makes me want to hide under my desk 🙈

I design and build websites for businesses and personal brands, each one from scratch with no template.

Every now and then I build a little app too, which is sometimes unnecessary but always cute, and does wonders for my mental health considering how many hours a day I spend on my laptop anyway 💻

When someone walks into your place they know how it feels within about three seconds, and the same thing happens when they open your website, except online you don’t get to greet them or put music on or let the room do the talking. It all has to come from the page, and it has to happen just as fast.

Hi, I’m Matea, I design and build websites, and if your site doesn’t feel like walking into your place, that’s the first thing I’d change.

Nobody leaves a website thinking the menu opened nicely. They just come away with a feeling about whether the business behind it seems like one that pays attention, and that feeling gets built one of these at a time.

If someone spent five seconds on your website, would they describe your business the way you would?

The reason you can’t stop scrolling is the same reason you stay on some websites and leave others in seconds.

Your eyes are wired to catch movement before your brain even catches up, so a little animation, a hover, a video playing behind the words, and suddenly people stay. But movement on its own isn’t the whole answer. It catches the eye, and ease of use is what makes people actually stay. A site can be full of life and still be completely effortless, nothing to figure out, nothing that gets in the way.

That’s the balance I love getting right, and it’s exactly what I build. by @mabra_studio

Most small businesses think a website just needs to look nice and list the basics, but the ones people remember are the ones that are a little fun to actually use.

Top tier productivity hack, and I can’t be the only one 🫠 I bet you can already tell what it is… or maybe I’m too old and you’re too young, but there’s just something about Tree Hill or any other 2000s tv show playing in the background that I don’t need to actually pay attention to, because I already know exactly how it goes, and somehow the work just gets faster. This is what building your website looks like behind the scenes — a teen drama, coffee going cold and bad posture going strong. by @mabra_studio

One minute of video, hours of my life, there is no other way to do it and I love it 🥹

Nobody scrolls a website thinking ‘wow, lovely spacing.’ They just feel that a page is pleasant and stay a little longer, and that feeling gets built exactly here, in the aligning, the timing changes, the scaling up and down, and the staring.

Every website I build starts from a blank canvas, so this is where all that time actually goes. What’s the detail you obsess over in your work, even though nobody notices? 🌞 by @mabra_studio
