Do you ever feel like the world of 9-to-5 jobs and contracts and appointments is what's fake, and the real world is just brimming all around you just waiting to be noticed? by @mabramof

"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." - Thorin, The Hobbit

P.S. It's been a minute since I read The Hobbit so hopefully my is accurate and I'm not totally off base! What are your thoughts?

The last couple weeks have been filled with getting our house ready to sell and coming and going during showings. I finally had a chance this afternoon to just sit down and relax. Back to devouring Pioneer Girl. I think I completely forgot the real world for a while while living in Laura's shoes during her final months in Walnut Grove.

I used to hear the word "repentance" and think of self-degrading mantras like "I am a worm," and "I am the chief of sinners." It felt inherently foreboding and threatening. Now I see it as an invitation to life, a journey of restoration to the image of God that was breathed into us from the beginning, and a celebration of our worth and belovedness.

Read more about repentance, or teshuvah, in my newest post--link in bio.

Three years ago, I sat in the floor sobbing for an hour straight at the end of my first day as a full-time teacher, because my daughter was in another classroom being raised by other people while I was raising someone else's kids. I had a child because I wanted to be with her and be present for her through her childhood. Instead I was sick with every childhood illness and virus under the sun for the next three years, on top of completely debilitating autistic burnout that included episodes where I couldn't even move or speak (and then add pregnancy to the mix the last year!) And at the end of each workday, I was too exhausted to cook, clean, or just enjoy being with my own daughter. Meanwhile, as time went on, she struggled emotionally and socially at school, even though not everyone could see it, and each day she complained that she hated school and just wanted to be home with me.

This year, I'm staying home with both my girls and we are embarking on our first year of homeschooling. I was homeschooled K-12 and looking back, I so appreciate the education I received while also recognizing what pitfalls I can avoid. Kindergarten is a low-pressure year to explore if it's a good fit for us and what homeschooling will look like for us, and I'm excited to see what revelations the year holds. Most importantly, I'm so excited to actually be home with my children, raising them myself, teaching my daughter to read and explore the world. I get to be two of the things I love the most: a teacher and a mommy (plus time to be a writer in the afternoon, if the baby allows!)

What part of you have you rejected or judged in the past that you are now learning to embrace? How can you celebrate the things about you that maybe not everyone understands? How does the image of God show up in the unique traits that make you you? by @mabramof

This picture was taken by my husband @julianthejules at Kibbutz Nir David in the Beit She'an Valley in Israel. Whenever I see it, it reminds me of Jesus' words, "Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?" (Matt. 6:28b-30).

Whatever is happening in your life right now, may you trust in the love of our heavenly parent and know God's provision in an incredible way. by @mabramof

Anyone else do the same?

I remember at least as far back as 11 years old observing people and then looking away as soon as they would catch my eye. I would feel mortified and awkward. I still do. I often wonder how many people think I'm a creep or just rude, but it's really just that I find people fascinating but find eye contact so uncomfortable that I can't hold it long enough to say "hi" or whatever you're supposed to do in those situations.

On that note, does anyone else find waving horribly awkward? I never know how much facial expression to do and how vigorously to wave or how much of my arm to use or just my hand from the wrist or even just my fingers?

In Amish country they just hold up their hand like they're turning left on a bike and I find deep comfort in that predictability. 🤣

How you likin' the rain, girl?

I love rainy days. For me they are about calm and quiet, snuggling with a book and a blanket and a cup of coffee, and not being assaulted by the brightness of the sun. It's a little harder to achieve the full experience with a four-year-old and an infant, but we try. 😅

"Surrender is letting go of the need to control every outcome and opening yourself up to everything that is. It is a loosening of the grip, letting go of the very narrow path you’ve imagined, and expanding yourself to receive not only what God has given you in the moment but also to all the possibilities he has in store for you. And it is so incredibly freeing—like you’ve been holding your breath for too long and then suddenly allowing your lungs to be flooded with oxygen once again. When you are able to surrender the thing you have been holding to so tightly, you begin to see the world again. The joy returns, flooding out all the bitterness that built up in stagnation for so long. You begin to see all the good that you already have, and instead of desperation, you begin to feel hope. "

"To accept the will of God never leads to the miserable feeling that it is useless to strive any more. God does not ask for the full, weak, sleepy acquiescence of indolence. He asks for something vivid and strong. He asks us to co-operate with Him, actively willing what He wills... To accept in this sense is to come with all the desire of the mind unto the place which the Lord shall choose, and to minister in the name of the Lord our God there--not otherwhere.
Where the things of God are concerned, acceptance always means the happy choice of mind and heart of that which He appoints, because (for the present) it is His good and acceptable and perfect will."

Is anyone watching the new Little House on the Prairie show on Netflix?

I haven't yet, but reading about it reignited one of my oldest and dearest hyperfixations and obsessions: Laura Ingalls Wilder! Baby has been extra fussy this week but whenever she's been napping and I haven't had housework to do, I've been devouring the text and annotations of Pioneer Girl, Laura's memoir written before the fictionalized books. I read almost 70 pages in two days, which, considering I usually only make it through five pages of a book a day, is a huge deal for me.

I've been obsessed with Laura since I was old enough to read Little House in the Big Woods. I always felt really connected to Laura, and her and her family have always felt so real and dear to me. As a teenager, I got to visit the site of the little house on the prairie as well as her home in Mansfield, MO. I can't wait to go again one day.

The books are so personal for me that I am genuinely a little scared to watch the show. I already have major misgivings about the bonnets. And yet the obsession is what it is so I will probably have to watch it on principle! So far, the fact that fans of the 70s show don't like it and fans of the books seem to on the whole gives me some hope. 🤣
