Manal Abu-Shaheen untersucht in ihrer Arbeit BEIRUT, wie durch globalisierte Kommunikation idealisierte Bilder einer Kultur mit den Realitäten einer anderen in Kontakt treten. Sie fotografierte die von Werbetafeln geprägte Stadt Beirut zwischen 2014 und 2020, einer Zeit des transformativen Baubooms, auf den 2019 der nationale wirtschaftliche Zusammenbruch folgte. Das Fehlen einer sichtbaren Geschichte der alltäglichen Landschaft des Libanon trifft auf die Ästhetik der Werbeanzeigen und Bauprojekte, die wie ein visualisiertes Ziel kapitalistischen Wachstums oder auch als mythologisiertes westliches Ideal deplatziert wirken.

Manal Abu-Shaheen (* in Beirut) ist eine libanesisch-amerikanische Fotografin, die in der Bronx (NY) lebt und arbeitet. Derzeit lehrt sie am City College of New York und ist außerdem als Gastkritikerin im Master-Studiengang Fotografie der Yale School of Art in New Haven (Connecticut) tätig.

BEIRUT by Manal Abu-Shaheen
 In her work BEIRUT, Manal Abu-Shaheen explores how, through globalized communication, idealized images of one culture come into contact with the realities of another. She photographed the city of Beirut—dominated by billboards—between 2014 and 2020, a period marked by a transformative construction boom that was followed by the national economic collapse in 2019. The absence of a visible history in Lebanon’s everyday landscape clashes with the aesthetics of advertisements and construction projects, which seem out of place—whether as a visualized goal of capitalist growth or as a mythologized Western ideal.

Manal Abu-Shaheen (* in Beirut) is a Lebanese-American photographer who lives and works in the Bronx, NY. She currently teaches at The City College of New York, and is a Visiting Critic in the Yale School of Art Photography MFA program, New Haven (Connecticut).
