BEIRUT by Manal Abu-Shaheen

In her work BEIRUT, Manal Abu-Shaheen explores how, through globalized communication, idealized images of one culture come into contact with the realities of another. She photographed the city of Beirut—dominated by billboards—between 2014 and 2020, a period marked by a transformative construction boom that was followed by the national economic collapse in 2019. The absence of a visible history in Lebanon’s everyday landscape clashes with the aesthetics of advertisements and construction projects, which seem out of place—whether as a visualized goal of capitalist growth or as a mythologized Western ideal.

Manal Abu-Shaheen (* in Beirut) is a Lebanese-American photographer who lives and works in the Bronx, NY. She currently teaches at The City College of New York, and is a Visiting Critic in the Yale School of Art Photography MFA program, New Haven (Connecticut).

Over the past three weeks, L Nour Editions moved through three book fairs — Photo London, ICP Photobook Fest, and New Jersey Art Book Fair.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the table, spent time with the books, shared stories, asked questions, signed up for the mailing list, bought books and prints, and supported the work.

Thank you to the organizers, staff, and volunteers at each fair whose labor made these gatherings possible. And thank you to the many publishers who were incredibly generous with their time, advice, and encouragement throughout the fairs. Independent publishing survives because people continue to show up for one another.

It was also a pleasure to have Mohamed Hassan sign copies of Alexandria to Cairo, Lucien Samaha sign alternative normative and to just meet so many photographers, artists, and readers whose work and conversations I deeply value.

A special thank you as well to everyone who supported Palestine through Pictures and Posters.

After weeks of travel, conversations, carrying books, installations, signings, and long days behind tables, I’m returning home deeply grateful for the community that continues to form around photobooks and independent publishing.
Thank you all.

Before Walewska8studio in Warsaw and my involvement in @innetowarzystwo and @fringe_warszawa there was Beach64retreat that I run with @bartremi in NY.

Beach64retreat in the Rockaways, Queens, New York was founded in 2017 with the aim to support on a micro level the creation of contemporary culture and promote global cultural exchanges in times when it is more and more difficult for creative individuals around the globe to thrive.

Beach64retreat offered a free of charge completely independent one-bedroom (kitchen/living and bedroom) in a private home on Beach 64th Street, in Arverne in the Rockaways, Queens, New York. The house is located on a quiet residential street between the Atlantic Ocean and the Jamaica Bay.

Beach64retreat was open for creators of any race, gender, age and nationality (artists, writers, musicians, architects, journalists, curators, programmers, art administrators, etc.). They were selected in an informal and no traditional application form process. The stay ranged from a week-end to a week, depending on the creator wishes. The time of stay was agreed upon with the founders depending on the space availability and can be negotiated and/or adjusted to better meet the creator’s needs.

The first season (March 21, 2017 – March 20, 2018) was attended by twenty one creatives and creators. During our second season (March 21, 2018 – March 20, 2019) we hosted thirty one American and International creatives and creators. The third, final season, ended on March 20, 2020 with a couple of new residents in 2021 and one in 2022.

“Between 2014-2020, I photographed Beirut, a city dominated by billboards. During those years Beirut was reshaped by a massive construction boom followed by national economic collapse in 2019. Driven by a lack of images of the everyday landscape in Lebanon, I was motivated to produce a photographic archive examining the use of soft power to purport a mythologized western ideal that is incongruous in the post-conflict city. I was interested in the impact of advertisements and pervasive neo-liberal capital as a colonial tactic. What is new and fascinating about this system is that it employs images as its most powerful tool.” - Manal Abu-Shaheen
