We were thrilled to welcome Elamin Abdelmahmoud for this year's Common Reading Program author visit. Generously and openly engaging with Level I Artscis, Elamin shared how his book “SON OF ELSEWHERE: A Memoir in Pieces” opened the door to having significant conversations about important topics with people around the world. In so doing, he made eminently clear how telling your story can be a powerful tool in creating change.

All first-year students received a copy of “SON OF ELSEWHERE: A Memoir in Pieces” earlier this summer so they could read it before the start of the Fall term, in preparation for this special visit with the author.

Thank you @elamin for coming to campus to speak with us about your experiences of migrating from Sudan to Canada and of writing this remarkable memoir. Just like your book, your visit was filled with genuine insight, humor, and warmth!

Upper-level Artscis, if you’re interested in reading SON OF ELSEWHERE: A Memoir in Pieces by Elamin Abdelmahmoud, it’s available in the McMaster library. We also recommend the audiobook, narrated by Elamin! by @macartsci

Aïssa graduated from the Arts & Science program with a combination in Sociology in 2012. During her time at McMaster, Aïssa was the local chapter president of AIESEC, and was also part of the International Student Services Student Success Leaders, and McMaster Model UN. Thank you, Aïssa, for sharing the important work you are doing to end violence against women and children.
