As night fell and folks started leaving for the comfort of their homes I worried I’d be alone to finish it off. I was mentally prepared but not excited for that. Thankfully I live in Salt Lake and have the greatest community ever. @hannah_schauss17 ordered some @pieboypizza pizza to be delivered to the beach and knowing that real food was on its way get me to only 6 laps in the dark. @pattyocasey and @markkgilbert showed up to pull the night shift with me. Pat was out there with more lumens than an 18 wheeler. The descents got slower but again the inability to see much of what was in front of us made the climb a lot easier to manage. At some point I was tracking for 11:30p end time but when all was said and done I was back down at the beach just before 11p. I was too tired to cry, all I could manage was a bit of a laugh. There was a lot of disbelief in those last laps. I really thought 12k was as far as I was making it Sunday. Thinking about Sam, Magnus, Brayden and Haylen all day gave me strength I didn’t think I had. My community gave me strength I didn’t think I had.

The common denominator we share here is bikes. It still blows my mind that something so simple can have such a profound effect on many and bring folks together from all over. That’s all we’re trying to do, build community, get active and hang out with our friends. @thewhiteline.foundation fundraiser is still active in my bio and will be until Sunday night. If you didn’t previously feel inspired to give I hope you do now. The work these folks are doing is important not only for us as cyclists but for all road users and our safety.

For Sam
For Magnus
For Brayden
For Haylan

To the Salt Lake cycling community, I’ve lived many places, been on many group rides, met many cyclists, but the love and support I felt from this crew on Sunday was unmatched. When I say there was no hope for me without y’all I mean it. Between those who dropped by for a lap, those who stayed for 10 and those who chilled on the beach and gave words of encouragement, we were never alone the whole 19 hours. There was never a shortage of cookies, pizza, snacks and @firstendurance bottles prepped full of carbs or electrolytes for the stops. Whatever I needed in the moment you provided and I can not be more thankful and gracious to be apart of such an incredible group of humans.

After my 10 minute lay down, and really @matt.kusbel enthusiasm to keep going and my desire to not be outdone by him, I got back on the bike and rode the wave. The next 8k felt like I was stuck in limbo, the number was changing but not fast enough. I could’ve sworn I saw 15k just to look down and see 14k but I knew if I could get to 20k we’d be alright.

The afternoon was a blur, not because it was going by quickly but because I was cross eyed way too far from the finish. Folks came and went, @devin___mitchell and @nicolette_dolan brought me pickles, that was life saving. I remember it being hot but don’t ask me to remember anything else, I was just riding my bike.

To be continued…

Well by golly that was the longest day I’ve ever had on a bike! Pressed play on the Wahoo at 4:44a and ended my ride at 10:59p, 14 hours and 22 minutes of moving time to get to 29,031ft makes that the slowest Everest I’ve ever done.

Maybe it goes without saying but that was also by far the hardest day I’ve had on the bike. It’s been a long summer of riding and racing and in September I wasn’t close to producing the miles I needed to feel confident going into this. I’ve climbed Everest twice before and took some false confidence from those previous successful attempts, not remembering how much they sucked or how fit I was for them, but when you’re riding for something as important as @thewhiteline.foundation you find a way.

The morning was unreal. 3 hours of sleep to wake up 15 minutes before the alarm was tough but pulling up to the Pinecrest beach where @garrin__evans @anyabiskupiak @stellaarobinson @tanner_cretti and @matt.kusbel were all waiting got me going. Those first few laps in the dark we were all in good spirits, we could hardly see what was in front of us so the grade was just what it was and we floated up the climb. Sunrise came quick and the clock restarted, everything in the dark was free in our minds, everything after sunrise was where the challenge really started.

It got pretty real pretty quick for me. I think it must’ve been around 11a that we hit 10k. While it felt like a good milestone, being 6 hours in and only a third of the way through was a rude awakening. Doing the math in my head I realized the goal of being done by dark was well out the window, and the goal of finishing at all started to look a little shaky. My legs were not having it and started to feel like bricks on the top section of 15%+. Tanner and Matt were dropping me on the first hard pitch from that point on so I told myself to just make it to 15k and take it from there. By 12k I announced I was done and got off my bike to take a little lay down on the asphalt beach confident the boys could finish it off without me.

To be continued…

4:30 AM call time for @macca_king and @tanner_cretti to figuratively summit Mt. Everest for @thewhiteline.foundation.

154 miles and 30,000 feet

It’s wild how many people showed up and/or donated to offer any sort of support. What an amazing community that exists here in SLC. A huge thank you to everyone who came and spun a lap, brought some snacks, or just hung out on the Pinecrest beach.

The White Line does amazing things for cyclists and it makes me really happy to see how many donations these folks were able to get for them.

The site is still live for another week at:
givebutter.com/tannermackenzie

Thank you to @attaquer for the kits and @firstendurance for the fuel! A feat like this is a little easier when you’re comfortable and fed. taken in Pinecrest Canyon by @macca_king

Ask anyone who rides a bike, we all have stories about aggressive drivers. Most of us are lucky to just cop some abuse and go on with our day, but we all have friends who haven’t been so lucky.

I think about my friend Sam Ozer often. He was 17 when he was hit and killed by a driver on Henry Ave in Philly. He had just clocked out from his dream summer job building bikes at a local shop and was riding his bike home when he was hit. He had just graduated from AIM Academy and was gearing up for his gap year in Banff before starting at UVM’s engineering school the following year.

I never saw Sam without a smile on his face. He showed up at Cadence every weekend for his AIM Academy NICA team’s group ride. The kid was smart, generous and full of life, the captain that team deserved and looked up to with immense awe. He had the world at his feet and it was all taken from him in the blink of an eye.

So, while tomorrow is going to be hard, what a privilege it is to still be able to do these stupid things for a good cause. The link in my bio is still active and will be for the next week. If you haven’t already, please consider donating. Your money will help support @thewhiteline.foundation in their efforts to make roads safer for all users so none of us have to experience loss like this again.

@tanner_cretti and I will be out there from 4:30a, come spin a lap, bring us snacks, provide entertainment, we’ll need it.

Clocking in at the long day factory again for Sam, for Magnus, for Brayden, for Haylan and the rest of us who didn’t make it home. taken in Pinecrest, Utah by @macca_king

How many laps until our legs give out? Did we pack enough food? Will we still like each other by the end?

Those are the questions Tanner and Mackenzie should be worrying about. Whether a driver kills them shouldn’t be on the list.

After the devastating crash involving Brayden, Haylan, and the Milligan Cycling Team, the fear of not making it home feels more real and painful than ever. We all want the same thing: to ride with our friends, explore the places we love, and get home safely.

That’s why Tanner and Mackenzie are taking on an Everest challenge to raise funds for The White Line and its work to protect people walking, running, biking, and rolling.

For the uninitiated, Everesting means climbing 29,029 feet in a single ride. For these two, that’s at least 32 laps of Pinecrest, a road outside Salt Lake City.

Make those laps count by donating through the link in bio. A pledge of $0.50 per 1,000 feet climbed by each rider adds up to about $29 if they both finish.

Thank you to sponsors, @attaquer , @firstendurance, and @bikeonscott. Every $5 donated earns an entry to win a jersey, bibs, socks, and a bottle.

For Magnus. For Brayden and Haylan. For everyone who should still be riding with their friends.

Join us in fighting for safer roads. by @macca_king
