Words can’t express my gratitude for life. For the sun, for the Earth. For the moon setting to give way to the stars. I checked an item off my bucket list last night, alone atop Loveland Pass at one o’clock in the morning. But I’m sure my relationship with the aurora has only just begun.

Primordial structures - perfectly and inevitably constructed - surround us. Patterns, shapes, and forms, bearing no origin, no explanation, dominate biological systems, and eventually, the forefront of our technologies. We struggle to innovate, while it seems nature is effortlessly able.

As I sip my steaming morning coffee, safe and warm in my office, I think about the extreme landscape that lies just beyond my window, taunting me. It challenges me to think differently, to live differently, to aim higher. I love my home.

Here’s a recent one from home. I miss the springs like crazy.
.
I feel like a deserter in the war on water. As springsheds all around the state continue to degrade, my close friends over at @keepersofthesprings are boots on the ground, fighting to make a difference. Their organization has cleaned thousands of pounds of trash out of the springs, educated countless people on what they can do to help, and in 2019 earned their registered non-profit status.

They are having an awesome event, Keep the Springs Glowing, at @fmbrewing! July 30th - 5pm - come on down to First Magnitude brewing, wear some neon, listen to some live music, and check out some of the awesome booths they’ve set up for you guys! Every beer purchased will plant some native eel grass in a spring in need!

Sometimes on the clearest days, from the right vantage point, you can see for tens of miles. Sometimes landmarks are laid out in front of you like subjects of a work of art. Sometimes the wind begins to flutter at just the right moment, right when you needed it, and it calms your soul, and sometimes it all happens at once. Moments like these are what keep me sane.

The impossibly massive ball of rotating plasma that allows any of this to exist seems a bit of a harsh parent - maybe that’s the key. It’s harsh parenting that allows us to be what we are. Warm, loving, not hovering too closely, but unwavering, strong and stern.

I don’t take death seriously, but I take life very seriously. There’s no evidence I will ever know what it is like to be dead. But there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that I’ll regret not really living my life. So I live hard, every day that I can. I have my off days, I have my doubts, and I’m not always one-hundred percent. But I will never stop loving this life and making it better. Big thanks to everyone who’s been there with me.

It’s easy to suffer - to find reasons to suffer - in any situation we find ourselves in. It’s hard to be happy and feel satisfied with our situation, whatever it may be. That takes effort. And that effort is where our satisfaction is derived. It’s an endless cycle, but just because we are bound to suffer, doesn’t mean we are bound to square one of suffering. We get better at it as we grow - if we try - and life gets much, much richer as a result.

At the end of the cave were a few bolts which made up a beautiful route through this limestone, and while I imagined myself in this shot climbing high above my pay grade, @claire_a_martian supported my creative vision.
