Nine years ago, I made the first iteration of Eulogy for the Dyke Bar in a small artist-run space in Brooklyn @wayfarersbk. I had felt so alone in my desire for spaces for dyke and dyke-adjacent queers and had *no* idea how many others were feeling the same.

I’ll never forget the line around the block of people waiting to watch the program I collaborated on with Queer Memoir…how mind-blowing it was to realize that there were others wanting to talk about it. Since then, our communities have continued to grow and expand our sense of queerness and queer space in so many ways, with more new dyke-run queer spaces opening around the country.

That night also really launched my art practice bringing sculpture together with community programming and events that has been so incredibly rewarding. One of the very best parts? That I continue to make intergenerational friendships with queers both older and younger queers than me…appreciating the work done for us to be here by elders and the work younger people are doing to keep making the world ever more queer.

Please spread the word that I am starting to look for a venue and partners to build a ten year anniversary version of the project in 2025. It will focus on what has changed since 2015, the various amazing projects also working around this issue, and what we want to build moving forward!

Huge thank you and respect to @cruisingpod for the work you are doing highlighting dyke and queer spaces through your podcast!! And for bringing me into conversation with @bushdykebar about their opening in Brooklyn and recording the interview you hear some of here. And @is__ab for fantastic work documenting that night with this video footage (her full short documentary can be found on my website, link in my bio). ❤️

The “below” part of “As Above, So Below”! Made in collaboration with @beamcenter and their amazing campers (age 8-17)!

YOU ALL it had a fire pit in the middle of it!! 🔥🔥🔥

Kids were invited to make wishes for their next year and place them in the fire before getting floated back to land.

@mitchelldose and @om.arii thanks for your help making a catamaran to ferry them out there! And Polo for helping on deck.

In Residence” Close Look: Macon Reed

On view through July 11, “In Residence: 18th Edition,” celebrates HCCC’s Artist Residency Program, which has supported artists working in the field of craft for more than two decades. This exciting edition, featuring work by the 2024-2025 resident artist cohort, bursts with personality and surprise, inviting conversation and connection.

One of these artists is Macon Reed (@macon_reed_studio), whose color-saturated “My First Existential Crisis” references one of the most beloved movies of the 1980s to make a very relevant point about what it means to make art. Check out this video to hear Macon describe their connection to the film, and explain how an impactful first viewing experience translated into an artistic philosophy that still impacts their work and teaching to this day.

Anyone else getting flashbacks from a traumatic first watch of “The NeverEnding Story”? Drop an “ARTAAAAAX!!!” in the comments below to trauma-bond with fellow sensitive souls! 🐴🏞️😭🐉

This video is a short clip from a full-length recording of our curator-led tour of “In Residence: 18th Edition,” which can be found on our YouTube page along with an extensive archive of exhibition programs, artist talks, and more! To learn more, check out the link in our bio! by @macon_reed_studio

Still so grateful for the opportunity to bring Eulogy for the Dyke Bar to Sydney this year, and in particular for our Queer Futures conversation with these amazing humans.

Queer Futures focused on the kinds of spaces queer communities desire to create moving forward, drawing from lessons learned by previous generations.

We discussed new and emerging types of queer parties and celebrations in Sydney, as well as how they evolved from and beyond established spaces and traditions.

These ideas were contextualized within a conversation about the politics of assimilation vs. liberation (pursuing access and visibility within existing institutions vs. transforming or working outside of these systems).

We were so lucky to have Megan Holloway (founder of Sad Dyke Sundays at the Bearded Tit), Kelly Lovemonster (producer of several popular queer events in Sydney, curator and writer), Kilia Tipa (storyteller and popular vogue performer at Sissy Ball) together to ask how we can create inclusive spaces that acknowledge intersectionalities and the unique needs of expanding queer communities.

Thank you so much @girlwhereyouat @saddsundays and @kiliatheestallion_ for your brilliance and making us all laugh too that night!

I am so wildly grateful and honored to be a United Stated Artists Fellow this year!

I shared posts from others in my stories, but have been putting off making my own. I think it is because I am still taking in the fact that I am now included among a group of so many artists I deeply admire.

And after so many years of working hard and living with a financial precarity many artists are all too familiar with, the generosity of this large, unrestricted award like has the potential to be truly life-changing.

Thank you so much @unitedstatesartists not only for your support, but being so sensitive to the real needs of artists today. ❤️

✨Quickie at the Movies✨

Short films, heavy hitters.

Visceral and cacophonous, Malic Amalya’s 16mm films traverse gritty landscapes of abandoned buildings, blast zones, and back rooms. Malic is an Assistant Professor of Experimental Media and Film Production at Emerson College in Boston.

Leather Graves is an experimental 16mm film that explores the permeable boundaries between exile and ecstasy. Cruising amongst gravestones, queers defy death by devouring candy-coated blossoms.

Macon Reed works in sculpture, video, painting, and social practice and is based in New Orleans. They primarily create large installations and facilitate extensive public programming inside of them, drawing from time in queer, punk, and DIY communities that experiment with alternative models of culture-making and power-sharing.

The Death Spa Experience takes viewers through an imaginary cosmetic spa procedure that is equal parts mindfulness and satire. Bringing together dream sequences, death meditation, funeral parlor and cosmetic spa advertisements, this experimental video connects our fears of aging and dying to consumption and unprocessed grief.

BEYONDEEP Productions was started by a couple who produces multimedia work to explode societal chains and shift paradigms. They spread love and magic through their pro-Black, trans and queer lens.

A t4t artist couple’s poetic visual meditation on giving and receiving “flowers” featuring a heartfelt interview and original song. Flowers Forever is a love letter to the trans community.

Sasha Wortzel is an award-winning filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist exploring how past and present are inextricably linked through resonant spaces and their hauntings. Her first feature documentary RIVER OF GRASS (2025) premiered at True/False and won IDA’s Pare Lorentz Award, the Joan VanDuzer

The boundless beauty of bodies in water through the lens of Shoog McDaniel — a fat, queer, and disabled photographer working in Florida’s vast network of freshwater springs. Bringing Shoog’s photography to life, the film immerses audiences in a world of fat beauty and liberation, one in which marginalized bodies — including bodies of water — are sacred. by @macon_reed_studio

I ❤️ OUR QUEER ELDERS! Some of the most meaningful relationships I have developed in doing the dyke bar project are with dykes and queers from older generations. I always feel so lucky to be in their presence.

One of the only things we all have in common across our expansive identities in the queer community is that if we are lucky to stay alive, we will also grow older and see the world change. I think it is so important to have intergenerational relationships and spaces to foster them.

To honor and learn from those who worked to create the rights we have, and also to create solidarity and understanding as our queer realities and possibilities shift across generations.

We were so lucky to have Robyn Kennedy to share some of Sydney’s queer history at Eulogy for The Dyke Bar. She is one of the 78ers, who took part in the original queer Mardi Gras and survived protests and police crackdowns in 1978. There were also a number of elder queers in the audience who shared their thoughts and experiences and it was so great to hear from them!

Hello from Ox-Bow School of Art, where I’m lucky to be a visiting artist this session. One of the oldest artist run schools in the country, this it’s 115th year! I forget how special it is to spend time in the woods with artists sometimes, but this year in particular it feels extra important.

So many young and very queer artists in attendance, creating a little refuge together to dream up other ways of being together in a world that really needs exactly that.

Also grateful to have my work with @beamcenter on the cover of their catalogue this year! Thanks @oxbowschoolofart! taken in Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists' Residency by @macon_reed_studio

Introducing Macon Reed, Louisiana Fellow for Visual Arts!
 Instagram: @macon_reed_studio

• Artist Statement

My work draws from years of participation in queer, punk and DIY communities where we experiment with how we can, and cannot, consciously shape the world in which we live.[...]

Pairing my consistent palette of bright colors with complex subjects creates a space of dissonance where reconsidering previously accepted perspectives or contradictory emotional landscapes becomes more possible. I love the brief moment when color affects our consciousness before our mind has the chance to assign a story about what that bodily perception means. My sculptures often represent everyday items and spaces, altered with a material sensibility that simultaneously signifies an other-worldliness. I like my sculptures to walk a line between feeling both casually accessible and highly considered. [...]

Artist Bio:

Macon Reed is a queer artist working in sculpture, installation, video, painting, and social practice. Their work has shown at venues such as the National Art School (Sydney), San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design, Transmediale Vorspiel (Berlin), La Patinoire Royale (Brussels), the University of New South Wales Gallery (Sydney), Columbia University, Brown University, Royal Academy of Arts Schools (London), Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, and Museum of Art and Design NYC. They received First Prize at the 2023 Louisiana Contemporary exhibition at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. [...]
