🚨New Publication Alert🚨 The ‘Pause Apothecary” by Macon Reed @macon_reed_studio is here! Reed invites us to dive into the world of all things menopause and peri-menopause through humor and their classic bold iconography and color palette. This publication is entirely silkscreen-printed and bound with drum leaf binding.

Produced as part of a growing movement to de-stigmatize menopause, “The ‘Pause Apothecary” began as an installation commissioned to help launch the first US national non-profit about menopause, Let’s Talk Menopause, in 2022. Taking the form of a fantastical pharmacy, each product addresses an aspect of menopausal and peri-menopausal experience. The Pause Apothecary is a catalog advertising the installation’s products, inviting awareness around experiences and building solidarity across healthcare issues impacted by gender-based discrimination, like menopause, abortion, and gender-affirming care.

In this video, Macon Reed speaks about the role of artists in cultivating imagination and how imagination provides people with the tools needed to change the world. Influenced by a nostalgic childhood film, “The Neverending Story,” they quote from the film, “People without hopes and dreams are easier to control, and whoever has control has power.”

We were glad to be back for another @cpw_kingston Photobook & Zine Fair! It was fantastic to (re)connect with all the vendors, locals, and folks who were visiting the Hudson Valley for the weekend. Also, it was an extra special fair for us since Meg Turner @megprinter was in town for the release of her new Artist Book “WET Vol.2”. If you were lucky, you got to hear her present about her wet-plate collodion and photogravure-printed process that span the book’s 22 oversized pages.

We also got to share our latest publications like “Iniquity/Inequity” by KaKeART @tatana1950 & @annkalmbach, and it was so exciting getting to share a sneak peek at Macon Reed’s @macon_reed_studio upcoming release, “A ‘Pause Apothecary”👀 Stay tuned for its official release coming soon…

In Residence” Close Look: Macon Reed

On view through July 11, “In Residence: 18th Edition,” celebrates HCCC’s Artist Residency Program, which has supported artists working in the field of craft for more than two decades. This exciting edition, featuring work by the 2024-2025 resident artist cohort, bursts with personality and surprise, inviting conversation and connection.

One of these artists is Macon Reed (@macon_reed_studio), whose color-saturated “My First Existential Crisis” references one of the most beloved movies of the 1980s to make a very relevant point about what it means to make art. Check out this video to hear Macon describe their connection to the film, and explain how an impactful first viewing experience translated into an artistic philosophy that still impacts their work and teaching to this day.

Anyone else getting flashbacks from a traumatic first watch of “The NeverEnding Story”? Drop an “ARTAAAAAX!!!” in the comments below to trauma-bond with fellow sensitive souls! 🐴🏞️😭🐉

This video is a short clip from a full-length recording of our curator-led tour of “In Residence: 18th Edition,” which can be found on our YouTube page along with an extensive archive of exhibition programs, artist talks, and more! To learn more, check out the link in our bio!
