🎺 NEW BOOK! 🎺
Coming from @_swiftpress this October, my first full-length ghost novella, Hobbe's Folly.

1904: Naive bookseller's assistant Henry Canning arrives at Hareswood Lodge to catalogue the library of its late owner. But he's unprepared for the horrors that lurk within Matthew Hobbe's collection – and something even more terrible that still lingers in the room itself.

The present day, and a young council officer is tasked with finding the story behind an unassuming brick building that is all that stands in the way of a vast new housing development. But to the concern of his colleagues, Ben finds himself growing more and more obsessed with the secret of Hobbe's Folly. Why does it have no doors or windows? Is it to keep people out – to keep something too awful to imagine trapped inside?

Popped in to @goldsborobooks to sign lots of copies of Hobbe's Folly - and to tell them how their shop inspired it. Henry Canning, the protagonist of the 1904 chapters, is a bookseller's assistant at Britnell & Son, at 30 Cecil Court (which doesn't exist: the street only goes up to 29!). I had the Goldsboro firmly in mind when I pictured its layout. And he sells books as terrifying as mine from there!

After that I dropped by Foyles (where Tommy Wildebood, the hero of my thriller series, regularly shoplifted in the 70s, but that's literally another story). There I found myself keeping company with the boss's wife on the Highlights shelves. Which sounds more like a cheeky sitcom plot than a ghost story.... by @macqueen.adam

Things to enjoy in the latest Private Eye podcast:
1) Righteous fury about Jeffrey Archer
2) Macqueen tartan tie
3) Gratuitous appearance of not one but TWO of my books on camera (and neither of them is the one I've got out now)

(Sadly you don't get to see Ian and I duetting on The Day We Went To Rothesay-o just ahead of filming, as inspired by the tie. Helen and Andy REALLY enjoyed that bit.) by @macqueen.adam

A while ago I started noticing these. Strange windowless buildings, so nondescript that they seem to fade into the landscape around them.

Once you start looking, you realise they’re everywhere. On the streets you walk down every day. Out of the window on your train journey to work.

And once you start noticing them, you realise just how sinister they are.

Some of them even warn you off with predictions of dire consequences for anyone who goes near.

I know the rational-minded among you will say they’re just bits of infrastructure – waterworks, electricty substations, things like that. But those of us who grew up in the 1970s and 80s don’t need @scarredpod to tell us just how terrifying those can be.

Besides, what do you know about what’s *really* inside? Isn’t that just the sort of thing people would say, to keep others away and stop them from investigating too closely?

That’s the starting point for my new ghost story, Hobbe’s Folly. A brick building, standing in the middle of a field, with no windows and no door, that’s been forgotten for more than a century.

But when it’s all that’s standing in the way of a new housing development, people finally ask the question – what the hell is hiding inside?

Hobbe’s Folly is the result. And it’s in bookshops now.

@jakearnottauthor , whose own terrifying Netherwood is out now, said “I was hooked from the start - Adam Macqueen is a master of the uncanny.” And Joel Morris - @gralefrit of the superb podcast Broken Veil - said it was “as compelling and troubling as a locked room at the end of a dark corridor. I ate it up.”

Get your copy in time for Halloween. And be sure to hurry past any windowless buildings you pass on the way to the bookshop, and try not to think about what might be locked away inside… by @macqueen.adam

Had a fantastic publication day afternoon with a mini book tour round my home town - signed copies of Hobbe's Folly for the lovely Jamie in @thewavesbookshop and in @waterstoneshastings - where they've got me on display right by the front door with STEPHEN FRICKING KING!! - and presented a copy to Hastings Library where I'll be hosting an afternoon of ghost stories on 21st October (thanks @east_sussex_libraries !). Now it's time to wet the baby's head with a cocktail and a suitably spooky candle.
Get your signed copies from either of the bookshops above, or order a copy from the link in my bio and stories! by @macqueen.adam

IT’S PUBLICATION DAY! And to celebrate, here are six pictures of my favourite places that are definitely haunted.

I’ll be back later to tell you a bit more about how my new ghost story Hobbe’s Folly, published today by @_swiftpress , came into being. For now, here’s their summary of the story:

Hobbe’s Folly is a deeply unsettling tale of ghostly estates and other dimensions by Adam Macqueen, author of Haunted Tales.

1904: Naive bookseller’s assistant Henry Canning arrives at Hareswood Lodge to catalogue the library of its late owner. But he’s unprepared for the horrors that lurk within Matthew Hobbe’s collection – and something even more terrible that still lingers in the room itself.

The present day, and a young council officer is tasked with finding the story behind an unassuming brick building that is all that stands in the way of a vast new housing development. But to the concern of his colleagues, Ben finds himself growing more and more obsessed with the secret of Hobbe’s Folly. Why does it have no doors or windows? Is it to keep people out? Or to keep something too awful to imagine trapped inside?

In Hobbe’s Folly, Adam Macqueen channels the masters of the ghost story in two intertwined narratives that build into a horrifying whole – and will ensure you never look at the view beyond your windows in quite the same way again.
