I never thought that a folk horror novel could get away with having a non-folk horror “monster”, but somehow this really works.

The two alternating perspectives are so refreshingly different from one another, and you can really tell the difference between how they’re written.

This is super engaging and each chapter made me want to read more and more!

It has a completely new concept to me, and i love the idea of whether a cell is to keep people out, or to keep something trapped inside.

As i reached the last few chapters the end seemed fast approaching and i was unsure as to how it would efficiently round itself off but it manages it in a way that, albeit quite fast paced, definitely is a suitable and satisfying conclusion.

Safe to say i loved this and I can’t wait for this to be published !

A summer of incredible reads that has ignited a thirst to read more! Love it when you hit a run of good books.

Chris is currently deep in Hobbe’s Folly by Adam Macqueen @macqueen.adam which is due to be published in October by Swift Press, and my next read when I finished devouring Little Wild by Laura Evans! @yetanotherevans

Both are available to purchase via our Seven Fables ‘Currently Reading’ shelf over on BookshopOrg

LITTLE WILD - Suffolk, 1937. During a sweltering heatwave, preparations for a party are in full swing at Snare House. The Winthers’ only daughter, Joanie, is returning from a summer abroad before starting university. Only Margaret, ward of the family and Joanie’s closest friend, knows the truth: Joanie and Margaret are in love and plan to run away together.

But when Joanie’s father discovers their secret, Margaret’s world is turned upside down. Exiled to a tumble-down lodge in the woods with her estranged father and his colony of magpies, she finds a perverse power is awakening within her—perhaps the very one that led to her mother’s ostracism. As the heatwave refuses to break, Margaret must decide whether to give in to her new, dark impulses in a bid to get what she most desires . . .

HOBBES FOLLY - 1904: Naive bookseller’s assistant Henry Canning arrives at Hareswood Lodge to catalogue the library of its late owner. But he’s unprepared for the horrors that lurk within Matthew Hobbe’s collection – and something even more terrible that still lingers in the room itself.

The present day, and a young council officer is tasked with finding the story behind an unassuming brick building that is all that stands in the way of a vast new housing development. But to the concern of his colleagues, Ben finds himself growing more and more obsessed with the secret of Hobbe’s Folly. Why does it have no doors or windows? Is it to keep people out? Or to keep something too awful to imagine trapped inside?

This Pride Month, we’re celebrating our Pride reads! 🌈

From lesbian witches building a commune in a redwood forest, to queer love and conspiracy in a small Irish town, to historical lives rewritten and reimagined, these are books that push against expectation, genre and history itself.

Our Pride reads this year:
📚A Circle Outside by Linda Rosewood
📚Future Fish by Conor Sneyd
📚The Enemy Within by Adam Macqueen
📚The Low Road by Katharine Quarmby
📚I’m Fine by Richard Hall
📚The Imaginary Lives of James Poneke by Tina Makereti
📚The Hurtle of Hell by Simon Edge

We’ll be sharing more about these books all month, but mostly we want to hear from you.

Which Pride read would you start with?

Thank you exceedingly to @_swiftpress and @macqueen.adam for this proof of Hobbe’s Folly!

If you like MR James but you want nuanced main characters who are brittle and vulnerable and have real human feelings, this is specifically and personally for you :)

By the sea is a library of abandoned and sometimes arcane books. An innocent young man is sent to categorise the collection. But there’s something terribly wrong with the window. It doesn’t show the right outside…

I loved Haunted Tales by @macqueen.adam 🤩🤩🤩

Well I ate this up pretty quick!! There is something about a short story. You know it’s going to come to an end fast, there’s not many pages there for dawdling and then BAM 💥 there’s the plot twist and…. it’s over.

My fav stories were The Wrong Teletubby and The Old Folk. Absolute chills!

📓📚📓 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪 📓📚📓
#𝗛𝗮𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘆 @𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗻｡𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗺

Back in 2005, instead of sending Christmas cards to friends and family, the author decided to write a haunted tale to send instead. And kept doing it. And this is the result; a collection of finely crafted stories filled with mystery, menace and magic.

Now as a rule I don’t usually get on that well with short stories filled. Now, as they’re too, err, short? Anyone else find that? But this lot well and truly knocked my socks off. I enjoyed pretty much every one of them and some I absolutely loved. From the devoted wife attempting to get a message to her husband through the frozen ice in Come Quick, Danger, to the eerie never ending stairs in Multiple Occupation, to a lonely bike ride heading to a remote cottage in The Old Folk, this collection has it all. Each story draws you in pretty much instantly, the writing is relaxed and informal (yet wonderfully descriptive and vivid) and every one of them is intriguing, chilling and clever. I’ve dipped in and out of this book all through December and now I’ve finished I can happily confirm that this is genuinely is one of the best short story collections I’ve ever read.

So while the nights are still dark, I can’t recommend this enough and a note to the author, can you please continue with this tradition, they definitely beat a Christmas card!

Thanks to @_swiftpress for my review copy. Out now.
