Bonjour! I’m Jill - Scottish-born, French by citizenship and family life. For more than 30 years, I’ve been cooking, baking and raising our French-Scottish family here in France. 🇫🇷

My aim is to help you feel at home with French cooking. It doesn’t need to be overcomplicated: every recipe I share is tested in my own kitchen, with the little details that help it work in yours.

Here you’ll find easy French family recipes, macaron recipes and practical tips, seasonal cooking from Paris to Provence, and desserts made with less unnecessary sugar and more flavour.

One thing I’ve grown to love about French hot chocolate is that it’s not too sweet.
The best versions I’ve had in Paris - the ones people happily queue for - usually aren’t overloaded with sugar or cream.

They simply taste more of good, dark chocolate.

That was a real surprise when I first moved here from Scotland years ago. I think I expected something heavier and sweeter.

Instead, it’s often the opposite: darker chocolate, less sugar, smaller cups… and somehow much more satisfying.

I finally filmed the way we make it at home here in France - including both the thick café-style version and the simpler breakfast bowl version many French families grow up with.

☕ Which would you prefer?

Ever eaten a mille-feuille and had the filling come spilling out the sides? Nightmare! 😱

Well here's a handy little trick that will save your pastry cream...

❌ Stick a fork straight through the top: your filling goes everywhere!
✅ Eat it side saddle: your pastry cream will remain intact and teatime is a breeze

And there you have it! It's as simple as that.

"Where do I find the best macarons in Paris?" 😍

A question I'm asked a lot!

Yes, my taste is personal but 30 years of living in Paris means this list isn't based on a handful of trips – it's been carefully curated over time. And guess what... I still update it to this day.

If you're coming to Paris soon, this is where I'd send you for macarons that are delicately flavoured, not too sweet and never dry (which is exactly how they should be).

Looking for a fun Halloween appetiser? Try brains on a baguette! 🧟🥖

It sounds gruesome, but it’s really quite delicious.

This French cheese dip from Lyon is called Cervelle de Canut, which literally translates as “silk weaver’s brain” – but fear not, there’s no brains actually involved!

It's made with soft cheese, garlic, shallots and fresh herbs, and only takes around 20 minutes to whip up.

Spread it over crusty bread and you’ve got a fun appetiser that’s bound to get people talking.

👉 Save this for Halloween, and follow the link in the bio for the full recipe (if you dare 👻)

Want to add more flavour to your cooking? Start with seasonal produce 👩‍🌾

In France, we quite literally live by the seasons, and the reason is simple – local produce is fresher, tastier and packed with vitamin rich fruit & vegetables.

Eating seasonally is also cheaper and kinder to the planet, and the shorter travel times mean that produce can reach you when it's fresh, locking in the flavour.

Wondering what's in season this September? Head to the blog to find out (link in bio).

Apples are at their best right now, but how do you pick the best ones?

If you’re looking to make the most of apple season, knowing what to look for and how to store them can make all the difference.

Here’s a couple of handy tips…

🍎 Avoid overly shiny apples, as these are often polished with wax!
🍏 A good apple should feel hard and crisp, not soft or mushy
🍎 Store in a cool, dark place – avoid the fridge, as chilling can dull the flavour
🍏 Keep apples away from other fruits, as they naturally contain a substance which matures nearby fruits quicker
🍎 Use lemon juice to stop cut apples from browning – a simple trick that's easy to forget

Save this guide for your next grocery shop! To learn which apples are best for cooking and baking, head to the blog (link in bio).
