The story of Desh Bandhu Gupta, Lupin and Indian Pharma @lupinglobal
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Welcome to Made in India - The Story of Desh Bandhu Gupta, Lupin and Indian Pharma.

This isn’t your typical business biography that celebrates the end result and glosses over the struggle. This is the story of distance travelled—from a village without electricity to building a company that changed global healthcare, from being carried 20 kilometers with a broken ankle to reducing tuberculosis deaths by 80 percent worldwide, from a ₹5,000 wedding gift to creating pharmaceutical infrastructure that serves half of America. We’ll be unpacking this transformation slowly, deliberately, because the real lessons aren’t in the destination. They’re in every decision, every setback, every moment of doubt between there and here.

If you’re building something that feels impossible, if you’re wondering whether your background disqualifies you, if you think you don’t have the right connections or capital, this story is for you. Made in India—the journey starts here.

Manish Sabharwal, Co-founder of TeamLease Services and co-author of Made in India, spent 17 years observing and learning from Desh Bandhu Gupta. He remembers the immense vitality, the smoldering fire in his eyes, the compelling charm of his smile, the audacity of his ambition. Desh Bandhu Gupta made eradicating TB his life’s work. He didn’t get it fully done, but he died trying. And the candle he lit, along with the other pioneers of Indian pharma, has destroyed darkness for millions of people. Made in India is an ibadat to that legacy.

Nilesh Gupta, MD of Lupin and Desh Bandhu Gupta’s son, remembers growing up with discipline, high standards, and incredible intensity. No career counseling, just performance reviews. But behind that intensity was deep care for people and fairness. Desh Bandhu Gupta saw the best in everyone. He didn’t network, he connected. People joined him not because they had to, but because they wanted to.

Why did China’s per capita GDP become 5 times India’s when both were exactly the same in 1990? Manish Sabharwal, Co-founder of TeamLease Services and co-author of Made in India, believes the answer is the vilification of entrepreneurs under the License Raj. Prime Minister Nehru once told JRD Tata, “I hate the word profit.”

That view weakened India by making entrepreneurs adversaries. But pharma showed what’s possible when government provides the vowels and the private sector provides the consonants. Under License Raj, India made 2-letter words. Desh Bandhu Gupta and the pharma industry proved India could make longer words.

Nilesh Gupta, MD of Lupin and Desh Bandhu Gupta’s son, shares five ways his father left the world better than he found it. Making Lupin the world’s largest TB drug producer. Co-creating an industry that now makes half the medicines consumed by Americans. The distance he traveled from a small village to a global company. Starting Corporate Social Obligation before it was mandatory. And treating Lupin as an Amanat, handed over in better condition to the next generation.

The book went through 28 iterations before it was ready, mirroring the persistence and reinvention that defined Desh Bandhu Gupta’s own journey. Five jobs before founding Lupin, each setback becoming setup, each iteration bringing him closer to what he was meant to build. That’s how institutions are made, slowly and with resolve, and that’s the story this book tells.

In 1948, a father carried his injured 10-year-old son for 3 hours to reach a hospital. Decades later, that same man flies to New York on the Concorde, takes a helicopter to a meeting, and returns the same day. Nilesh Gupta, MD of Lupin and Desh Bandhu Gupta’s son, says this wasn’t just dramatic. It was Dad. Humble beginnings, boundless energy, and a pace the rest of the family spent their lives trying to keep up with.

In 1991, people predicted Indian companies would be wiped out by multinationals. India would become like Wimbledon, they said. Played in England, but no Britisher ever wins. Pharma proved them wrong. In 1970, only one Indian company was among the top 10 pharma companies in India. Today, there is only one multinational in that list. Manish Sabharwal, Co-founder of TeamLease Services and co-author of Made in India, explains what changed: Indian companies built meritocracies, invested in technology, invested in people. You don’t have to be Western to be modern. That’s the lesson Desh Bandhu Gupta understood when he built Lupin.

Business Standard puts it simply. Made in India is an important addition to Indian business history because it documents a story that somehow remained untold for decades. How a village boy from Rajasthan with no connections, no capital, and a lifelong limp built Lupin into a $10 billion pharmaceutical company. How Indian entrepreneurs defied the odds and made India the pharmacy of the world. This is entrepreneurship without mythmaking. The failures alongside the successes. The financial crises alongside the comebacks. The personal toll alongside the achievement. A story that belongs in Indian business history.

Most people quit their jobs when they have a plan. Desh Bandhu Gupta quit when he had a belief and ₹5,000. No business plan, no factory, no distribution network. Just a chemistry teacher who understood pharmaceuticals and a wife who understood him. The first time he tried to quit May & Baker, his boss talked him out of it. So he stayed, miserable, until Manju made the decision irrevocable by handing him her father’s wedding gift. That’s partnership. Not supporting someone’s dreams in theory, but funding them in practice. Fifty-six years later, that ₹5,000 became Lupin, a $10 billion company.
