From living in the valleys of Kashmir to co-founding @teamlease_services, one of India's largest staffing companies, Manish Sabharwal has spent decades championing entrepreneurship, jobs and institution building.

His latest book, Made in India (@madeinindiastory), chronicles the remarkable journey of pharma major @lupin.india's founder Dr Desh Bandhu Gupta while tracing the rise of Indian entrepreneurship. It was a pleasure writing about his life, his book and the ideas that continue to shape his thinking. My latest for Global Indian.

Thank you @silkyjchandwani for the wonderful opportunity. @lupinglobal

This book is not really about a billionaire industrialist or the success of a pharmaceutical company. Beneath the business story, it is about distance. The distance between a village with no electricity and global boardrooms. The distance between a father carrying his injured son for hours because there was no hospital nearby and that same boy later helping produce medicines used across the world. The distance between a country dependent on imported drugs and a country that now keeps millions alive through affordable medicines. That distance is the real story of this book.

Throughout the narrative is not wealth, but scarcity. Scarcity of healthcare, opportunity, infrastructure, dignity and mobility. Rajgarh is not shown as a romantic village filled with innocence. It is shown as a hard place where survival itself demanded discipline. Children died because treatment did not arrive in time. A broken ankle became a lifelong limp because poverty delayed medical care. Tuberculosis was not an idea in a textbook. It was the death of a childhood friend standing outside a closed door. The book quietly shows how personal suffering often shapes industrial history more than policy papers do.

Desh Bandhu Gupta does not emerge here as a loud visionary with dramatic speeches. He appears as a man built slowly by routine, denial, humiliation and persistence. There is something deeply revealing in the fact that he was shaped not by privilege but by waiting. Waiting outside offices during the Licence Raj. Waiting for opportunities. Waiting through financial crises. Waiting while others dismissed him. The book understands that entrepreneurship in India was not only about intelligence or innovation. It was also about surviving systems designed to exhaust ambition.

The writing repeatedly returns to discipline, almost like a form of resistance. DBG’s life is filled with routines, physical exercise, controlled habits and relentless work. Even as a child he seemed disturbed by disorder around him. That detail becomes important because the larger India around him was itself disordered.

From growing up without electricity or water… to building one of India’s biggest pharmaceutical companies, this is the incredible journey of the founder of Lupin. 🇮🇳
His story isn’t just about success… it’s about failure, resilience, and long-term thinking.

👉 Fired from his job at BITS Pilani
👉 Battled lifelong health challenges
👉 Built a global pharma company during the License Raj
👉 Helped fight diseases like tuberculosis

But the real lesson?
Success is not overnight. It’s compounding.

In this video, we break down:

Why getting fired changed his life forever
How he built Lupin with ethics in a tough system
The power of compounding in entrepreneurship
Why curiosity, courage & patience matter more than IQ
Lessons for India’s growth and future leaders

This isn’t just a business story…
It’s a blueprint for anyone trying to build something meaningful. 🚀
