Before volunteers start work in Livingstone, they spend an afternoon walking through Linda, one of the communities where we do much of our community work. It’s a gentle introduction to markets, community members, and some cultural customs. 🇿🇲

Mornings in Livingstone often start in a classroom. Our volunteers work alongside local teachers in community schools, helping with maths, English, and science lessons. 🏫

It’s less about standing at the front and more about the small stuff: helping a student get through a tricky page, keeping a lesson moving, giving a teacher a bit more room to work with. ✨

Our gender equality program in Livingstone runs through weekly sessions with the same group of girls: conversations about self-esteem, health, financial literacy, and decision-making, alongside separate sessions with boys aimed at the same understanding from the other side. It follows a structured, year-long curriculum, and volunteers help track how the group’s confidence and understanding shift over the course of it. 💙

This Women’s Month, we’re celebrating the extraordinary women who walk alongside The Empathologist Foundation.

Today we celebrate Anna Lusty: The Story Catcher. 📸💙

When we first met Anna at an NGO event and told her how our Foundation was born through our own adoption journey, her face lit up.
Then she said something simple: “You need to tell your story.”

Sometimes, that’s all you need. Someone who sees the human behind the project and reminds you that your story matters.

Little did we know that we were speaking to one of South Africa’s most talented photographers, with an extraordinary ability to capture the heart of the work she sees. So, when Anna offered to photograph our projects, we were beyond excited.

From the Toddlers Nursery and Girls Club House in Delft, to helping us capture the story of a home built for one of our beneficiaries, and our Reading Club for adolescents, Anna has put images to our words.
And somehow, she always manages to capture the soul of what we do.

They say an image can speak more than a thousand words. With Anna, we think that might be an understatement.

Thank you, Anna, for believing in us, for checking in on us, and for helping others see the stories we are trying to tell.

Thank you for choosing to Walk With Her. 💙

Access to healthcare is still a daily challenge for many South African communities. The Pebbles Health Clinic in Stellenbosch is changing that—offering primary, wellness, and dental care to children, families, and farm communities, free for beneficiaries and accessible to all. With transport, appointments, and outreach into surrounding areas, it’s bringing dignified care closer to home.#ImpactStorytelling#HealthcareAccess by @madeinmycamera

Evidence shows that after school programs measurably reduce behavioural problems, improve attendance at school and social-emotional skills, as well as raising reading and maths scores - so clubs aren't just "nice to have" but a proven, practical intervention to build resilience and keep vulnerable youth on track. by @madeinmycamera

Based in a rural community in Malawi, the Mphatso Foundation runs a community school and a food program for babies and kids - amongst other things. We documented some of these projects last year during our humanitarian photography workshop.

Our next workshop will take place in South Africa in June next year, and applications are now open. Follow our Linktree in our bio to find out more! ☝️

Not your average outing. For this group of young adults, it was a first time visit to Cape Town and the waterfront. They are part of a deeply human project working with young people who have fallen through the cracks — often without formal education, IDs, or literacy, shaped more by circumstance than choice. Aptly named:

For our last humanitarian photography workshop, we ventured to rural Malawi, where one of our beneficiary nonprofits was @earth.workshops.malawi 🌱. This organization runs workshops in rural communities that aim to increase food and water security, improve nutrition and soil health, and tackle deforestation. The workshops introduce communities to easy-to-implement solutions, such as alternative farming methods, fuel-reducing cook stoves, and mulching techniques. 🌍🌳

And we’re now getting ready for our next humanitarian photography workshop, which will kick off in a couple of weeks in Stellenbosch, South Africa! It will be run by @madeinmycamera & @simplylifephotographs 📸

If you’re interested in becoming a humanitarian photographer, you can apply to join us in 2026. Applications for our May / June workshop are now open. (You can find info through our Linktree! ⬆️)

“Shooting in layers allows me to create a series of images that are not only visually compelling, but also rich in context and meaning. By weaving together wide shots, mid-range interactions, intimate close-ups, and layered compositions, you can build a narrative that truly reflects the complexity of a place and its people. This approach ensures that the story remains honest yet nuanced, highlighting both the struggles and the strength of the community.”

Now on our blog; storytelling photography tips by humanitarian photographer Anna Lusty. 🌟

Community gardens are more than just spaces to grow food—they are hubs of resilience, connection, and empowerment.
Moya we Khaya (Spirit of Home) is a shining example in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. This inspiring organic farming enterprise not only provides fresh, high-quality produce to the local community but also creates employment opportunities, ensuring sustainable livelihoods.
At the heart of it all are the incredible women—many of them grandmothers—who work the soil with dedication and love. #MoyaWeKhaya #CommunityGardens #UrbanFarming #WomenWhoFarm by @madeinmycamera
