Before volunteers start work in Livingstone, they spend an afternoon walking through Linda, one of the communities where we do much of our community work. It’s a gentle introduction to markets, community members, and some cultural customs. 🇿🇲

“During dolphin monitoring, we track the dolphins’ surface time, their behavior, the number of dolphins in each pod, including adults and calves, and the location where they were spotted. We also record the number of boats and tourists around each dolphin pod.

Over the years, the data has shown a gradual decrease in dolphin numbers, and dolphins have been spotted a little further away from Kizimkazi and the tourism access points compared to previous locations. We have also observed that the dolphins’ surface time decreased significantly as the number of boats and tourists per dolphin pod increased. This helped us understand how increasing tourism pressure can affect dolphin behavior and provided useful information for promoting more responsible dolphin tourism and conservation.” 🐬

Marine conservationist Ahmada Hashir explains the methods of - and reasons behind - our dolphin monitoring in Zanzibar. Find the full blog through the link in our bio. 🔗

Mornings in Livingstone often start in a classroom. Our volunteers work alongside local teachers in community schools, helping with maths, English, and science lessons. 🏫

It’s less about standing at the front and more about the small stuff: helping a student get through a tricky page, keeping a lesson moving, giving a teacher a bit more room to work with. ✨

Our gender equality program in Livingstone runs through weekly sessions with the same group of girls: conversations about self-esteem, health, financial literacy, and decision-making, alongside separate sessions with boys aimed at the same understanding from the other side. It follows a structured, year-long curriculum, and volunteers help track how the group’s confidence and understanding shift over the course of it. 💙

Ecobricking is simple: you pack soft plastic waste, like wrappers, bags, and packaging, into an empty bottle with a stick until it’s completely solid, without any air pockets. These become solid building blocks. Enough ecobricks, and you can build with them: benches, garden beds, even walls. 🏠

This is part of our environmental work in Livingstone, where plastic waste builds up with no consistent system to recycle or safely dispose of it. It’s low-tech, effective, and - dare we say - fun. 😊

This Women’s Month, we’re celebrating the extraordinary women who walk alongside The Empathologist Foundation.

Today we celebrate Anna Lusty: The Story Catcher. 📸💙

When we first met Anna at an NGO event and told her how our Foundation was born through our own adoption journey, her face lit up.
Then she said something simple: “You need to tell your story.”

Sometimes, that’s all you need. Someone who sees the human behind the project and reminds you that your story matters.

Little did we know that we were speaking to one of South Africa’s most talented photographers, with an extraordinary ability to capture the heart of the work she sees. So, when Anna offered to photograph our projects, we were beyond excited.

From the Toddlers Nursery and Girls Club House in Delft, to helping us capture the story of a home built for one of our beneficiaries, and our Reading Club for adolescents, Anna has put images to our words.
And somehow, she always manages to capture the soul of what we do.

They say an image can speak more than a thousand words. With Anna, we think that might be an understatement.

Thank you, Anna, for believing in us, for checking in on us, and for helping others see the stories we are trying to tell.

Thank you for choosing to Walk With Her. 💙

💜August is Women’s Month in South Africa💜

This year’s national theme, “Empowered Women Empower the Nation,” reminds us that when women are given the opportunity to heal, learn, lead, and become economically independent, entire families, communities, and our nation grow stronger.

At The Empathologist Foundation, this belief is at the heart of everything we do. Every day, we walk alongside women as they rebuild confidence, develop new skills, pursue employment, start businesses, and create brighter futures for themselves and their children.

Although our Foundation was founded by two men, we believe that gender equality is not a women’s responsibility alone, it is a journey we must all walk together.

This Women’s Month, we also want to celebrate the incredible women who make our mission possible: our beneficiaries, trustees, partners, volunteers, donors, and every woman who chooses to stand with us in creating a more compassionate and equitable society. Thank you for inspiring us every single day.

Throughout August, we’ll be sharing inspiring stories, celebrating remarkable women, and highlighting the people and initiatives creating lasting change.

💜Keep an eye on our Women’s Month updates, and let’s keep Walking With Her.

Partner Spotlight: Anna Foundation.

We’re proud to support the incredible Anna Foundation, which brings after-school education, sports, and life skills to rural children through their 3 R’s programme: Reading, Running, Right-ing.

From empowering young learners to training local women as facilitators, their impact reaches far beyond the classroom.

Based in a rural community in Malawi, the Mphatso Foundation runs a community school and a food program for babies and kids - amongst other things. We documented some of these projects last year during our humanitarian photography workshop.

Our next workshop will take place in South Africa in June next year, and applications are now open. Follow our Linktree in our bio to find out more! ☝️
