Kick off the fall season with us at ISCP! Next Tuesday, October 6, from 6:30–7:30pm, join us for Artists at Work, where artist-in-residence Madeleine Andersson will present her thought-provoking performative lecture, 'Toilet Science and the Rise of Sewer Protestantism.'

Beginning with the proposition that “the thing called civilization began not with the advent of written language but with the first toilet,” Andersson will trace the historical relationship between the human body and modern sewer systems. She will examine how the development of waste-management infrastructure reshaped sensory experience and ideas about cleanliness, morality, and the body, and consider these transformations in relation to shifting social, spiritual, and political structures governing bodily waste.

About the artist 🗣️

Andersson's practice proposes alternative historizations and speculative structures to expose and disrupt the psychosocial dimensions of knowledge production. Her multidisciplinary work across video, sculpture, and performance brings together academic discourse, scientific instruments, pseudoscientific excitement, social media, and horror films in playful installations. Through these unexpected combinations, Andersson investigates the intersection of science and pop culture, self-experimentation, quests for inner truth, and encounters with perversion.

Toilet Science and The Rise of Sewer Protestantism
Lecture Performance, 55 min, 2025
Performed at Moderna Museet Stockholm and Art Hub Copenhagen.

“We live in a time where it is difficult to understand even the most basic stuff around us. What is that thing? What does it do? Why is it even here to begin with? Toiletphiles argue that the thing called civilization began not with the advent of written language but with the first toilet. Waste control allowed individuals to quit wandering the earth trying to escape their dung and finally settle down.

The speculative claim that is the lecture performance ‘Toilet Science and The Rise of Sewer Protestantism’ tells a story of how our butts got tied to the sewer system, how we learnt to perceive our senses through the modern invention of waste management and how our souls underwent a profound spiritual rewiring brought about by the shifting regimes of power controlling our excrements.”

Happy Spiraling
Group show at @msuzagreb curated by @organvida_festival

”Degenerative Knowledge Production” is a multi-material research project that questions the crisis of contemporary science through a narrative of compulsive self-experimentation, collective stupidity and a post-truth world. The project builds on the concept of degeneration historically understood as a threat to social order, today encompassing biological, medical and mathematical dimensions, exploring what knowledge can do, what stories it can shape, and who holds the power to construct them.”

Lecture performance: Perversion of Science by Madeleine Andersson & Mandus Ridefelt

The history of science is one of the normative. What happens when you are obsessed with the norm? It quickly turns to the question of the anomaly.

Join artist Madeleine Andersson and biologist/writer/artist Mandus Ridefelt for Perversion of Science, a lecture performance obsessed with the anomalous. We will trace scientific methodology shifts according to what our idea of a legible experiment is - impacting on the ways experiments are designed. We observe, lick and poke at the existential dimensions of self-experimentation and place the pervert as the antagonist of a kind of knowledge that doesn’t accept boundaries, be they ethical, planetary or of the self.

Madeleine Andersson is an artist based in Copenhagen, with a research-based practice positioned at the intersection of science and pop culture. The work by Andersson has previously exhibited at Kunsthall Trondheim (2025), Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, Stockholm (2025), O–Overgaden, Copenhagen (2024), documenta institute, Kassel (2024), Vermillion Sands, Copenhagen (2024) and Färgfabriken,Stockholm (2023).

Mandus Ridefelt is a writer and science communicator living in Copenhagen. His work concerns science, art and philosophy as conceptual constellations and infrastructural speculation. He has worked with a range of organizations including International Society for Artificial Life, Index Foundation (SE), Society for Multidisciplinary and Fundamental Research, Diakron (DK), Medialab Matadero (ES), Simiyya (EG/DK). taken in Discord by @madeleine_andersson_

10K VIRGIN BRAINS
Solo exhibition at @kunsthalltrondheim

“An exhibition unfolding as an eerie labyrinth within the basement of Kunsthall Trondheim. Across fourteen channels, brain-based imagery draws the audience from the external world into an interior psychological space — a strange, violent, and sensual process of identification with any pink, pulsating mass that appears on the screens.”

In an era where artificial intelligence increasingly shapes our world, what distinguishes genuine intelligence from its absence?

Andersson’s 10K VIRGIN BRAINS confronts this question through thousands of white plastic containers that occupy Kunsthall Trondheim, mirroring The Brain Collection at the University of Southern Denmark—a repository of over 9,479 ‘virgin’ brains extracted from patients predominantly diagnosed with mental illnesses, but never influenced by pharmaceuticals.

These containers form an eerie labyrinthine installation throughout the Kunsthall’s sublevel basement galleries, drawing visitors from the external world into an internal confrontation with themselves through encounters with fragments of brain-based imagery, mostly pulled from the internet. Animated lab gloves also reach into this maze like disembodied hands emerging through walls—spectral appendages that evoke both brain-eating zombies and the grasping hands of neuroses, inhibition, and morality.

Knock, knock
Wood, 2024

A sculptural reinterpretation of the mortsafe – a protective iron cage used by British and American churches in the 17th and 18th centuries to prevent grave robbing. At the time, state-controlled autopsies were limited due to Christian doctrine, giving rise to an illegal trade in corpses to advance medical research.
