POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
On Saturday, I found out I was named Outstanding Visual Journalist of the Year by the Nevada Press Foundation as part of their Awards of Excellence.

I’m honestly still pretty overwhelmed and shocked. Three years ago, I moved to Nevada and started building a life and career in a place that has come to mean so much to me. It’s healed me as much as it has challenged me. Getting to work in Las Vegas and tell the stories of this city through my camera, especially alongside the incredible people at the Las Vegas Review-Journal, is something I feel incredibly lucky to do.

One of the most special parts of the weekend was having my parents there with me to receive this award. They’re the ones who fostered my love of photography from the beginning. So many of my earliest memories of taking pictures came from road trips with them as tasks for their yearly scrapbooks, and they’ve always encouraged me to be creative and follow that part of myself. I love to tell anyone who will listen that my dad turned a blind eye when I stole his point and shoot camera as a kid, and let me fill up all his SD cards. Anytime I photograph a show here, I remember my mom waiting up for me when I would photograph concerts as a teenager, eager to hear how it went, even if it meant being up late when she had work in the morning. Getting to share this moment with them meant more than I can really put into words.

To be recognized like this just three years into living and working in Nevada is something I’m incredibly grateful for. Thank you to everyone who has trusted me with their stories. I learn a lot from my job and the people I meet from it everyday. Those stories live inside of me and continue to change me, as silly as it sounds.

I really do love what I get to do, and I feel very lucky to call Las Vegas and this beautiful state home. 💕 taken in Las Vegas, Nevada by @madelinepcarter

A picture’s worth 1,000 words—and @madelinepcarter’s viral photo of A’ja Wilson might just be more.

@documeg caught up with the photojournalist to talk more about the iconic Aces-Fever Game 3 moment, her journey behind the camera, and more.

One photo taken in a moment of instinct, turned into a reminder to always trust your work.🔥

Photographer @madelinepcarter, who was behind the viral A’ja Wilson photo, almost deleted it. After a night of second-guessing herself, she took a risk and posted the pic to social media. She then woke up to thousands of likes, people tagging brands like Nike and Gatorade, and the image being called the sports photo of the year.🤯📸

In our conversation with Madeline, she opened up about the preparation behind capturing the moment, the self-doubt that almost stopped her from sharing it, and the reminder that usually we’re our own worst critics.🙏❤️

Before it would go viral, Review-Journal photographer Madeline Carter considered deleting her photo of A’ja Wilson after posting it on social media. The next day, Carter woke up to her phone buzzing.

More than 500 books have been collected to be donated during a weeklong book drive in Las Vegas, honoring Dolly Parton’s legacy of literacy.

Sunday’s Dolly Parton tribute brunch at The Phoenix Bar & Lounge spotlighted the ongoing effort, with books being collected across five LGBTQ+-friendly businesses in the past week which will benefit Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and Spread the Word Nevada. The bar partnered with Sin Sity Sisters, a local non-profit organization, and over $500 was raised for the non-profit during the brunch.

Seven months after 25-year-old Ruben Ibarra was struck and killed in a hit-and-run while using a crosswalk in the central Las Vegas Valley, no arrest has been made, according to police.
Cynthia Ferguson, his mother, says she has contacted police regularly, hoping for updates in her son’s case.

Ibarra’s death is part of a broader trend. Data shows fatal hit-and-run crashes have increased in Las Vegas since 2020, with 33 fatalities recorded in 2025—the highest annual total since at least 2018. Many of those cases remain unsolved months or even years later.

This story by @spencer.levering appears in today’s @reviewjournal. Spencer and I visited Cynthia’s home, where she lives with her mother, Carla, who also spoke to us about her grandson’s death. Please give it a read. by @madelinepcarter
