I have seen how creativity quietly replenishes things people didn't realise they had lost; confidence, clarity, and an almost forgotten sense of joy

Helene has been coming to my classes, pretty consistently for the past couple of years. Like me, she lived in the same street as Lindy Solomon, founder of this process-driven art methodology. We watched students for years coming and going from Lindy’s property with canvases and art bags, intrigued and daunted at the same time.

Helene has finally found the right time in her life to nurture her own creativity and inner life.

Thank you Helene for the ongoing support over the years and your beautiful creative spirit that you grace the studio with each and every week. I’m so grateful for my students, who we will be showcasing a bit more here on my social media.

Is it your time to release your creative heart onto the page?

What lies beneath
Clay - unearthing the form

In winter, the most important work is invisible.
The roots are deepening, the bulb is forming, the seed is cracking open in the dark.

What is happening in you right now that no one can see yet - including you? by @madevisible_art_studio

“The wound of our loneliness is like the Grand Canyon — a deep incision in the surface of our existence which has become an inexhaustible source of beauty and self-understanding.”

Henri Nouwen (The wounded healer concept) 1932-1996 Dutch priest and professor

Trauma and pain resist language. This is well documented — both experientially and neurologically. The parts of the brain that process traumatic experience are not primarily verbal. They are sensory, somatic, imagistic. This is one of the reasons talk therapy alone is insufficient for deep healing, and why creative approaches — art, movement, music — reach places that words don’t.

When you make a mark on a page, tears a piece of collage, press your hands into clay — you are working in the language that trauma actually speaks. Not explaining it. Not narrating it. Giving it form. And form — visible, tangible, held in the hands — can be looked at, reflected upon, responded to. It externalises what was internal. It makes the invisible visible.

“Art does not reproduce what we see. It makes us see.”— Paul Klee Swiss German Artist (1879-1940)

The Mark as Living Thing

Swiss-German painter and teacher at the Bauhaus who believed that art makes the invisible visible — the inspiration for my new studio name- Made Visible (watch this space-new website to launch soon)
His theory of mark-making is that a line is a dot that went for a walk: the mark has its own life, its own direction.

His Pedagogical Sketchbook is one of the most beautiful explorations of the intelligence of the mark ever written.

Check him out to explore further…...

“To be an artist is to dare to shape the unseen: to give form to grief, to whisper hope, to weave beauty into fractures.”
— Makoto Fujimura

Kintsugi (金継ぎ) is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with gold, silver or platinum. The philosophy behind it is that the break is not something to conceal — it is something to honour. The repaired object is considered more beautiful, more valuable, and more interesting than the unbroken one. The fracture is made luminous.

Kintsugi emerged from Japanese aesthetic philosophy, specifically the concepts of wabi-sabi (finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence) and mono no aware (the bittersweet awareness of transience).

The reason kintsugi has resonated so widely in contemporary culture is that it offers a reframe that many people are starving for: what if the broken place is not the end of the story? What if it is where the most beautiful thing happens? by @madevisible_art_studio

“Before a painting has a subject, it has a ground — a first layer of colour, texture and instinct that everything else is built upon. What if that were also true of you? What has life already laid down in you — what colours, textures, marks — that quietly show through everything you do?”

Exodus 3:5 — Holy Ground

“Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” The ground beneath Moses’s feet is ordinary ground — desert scrub, rock, sand. And it is holy. Not because it has been prepared or decorated or designated, but because God is present in it. In our first session, the ground the students made with their own hands was similarly ordinary and similarly charged. The act of making is a form of standing on holy ground.

“and try to love the questions themselves”

Rainer Maria Rilke — Letters to a Young Poet
Rilke (1875-1926) was an Austro-Bohemian poet, deeply God-haunted and philosophical.

His Letters to a Young Poet — written between 1903 and 1908 to a young military cadet who wanted to be a poet — are among the most extraordinary pieces of advice ever given about the creative life and the interior life simultaneously. They are not about poetry. They are about how to live.

The most famous passage:
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given to you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, gradually, without even noticing it, you will live your way into the answers.”

This is the philosophical heart of process-driven art: not seeking answers, but living the questions. What will we find there?

My final term for the year...

Contact me via the link in my bio to book!

If you have been meaning to treat yourself to some ‘time-out’  from the busyness of life, doing something creative and interesting, please do join me before this year comes to a galloping close.

In this course, we will explore the tension between structure and flourishing, permanence and impermanence, what’s hidden and what’s seen.

Bone and Blossom is an eight-week process-driven art course that moves from structure toward flourishing — not as a straight line, but as two things gradually learning to share the same page. The course opens with observational drawing and hand-built clay sculpture, exploring form, structure, and negative space. It moves through printmaking and mixed media collage as bone and blossom begin to appear together, into wet-on-wet botanical painting at its most expressive point, and closes with smaller, intimate reflection pieces — cut down from larger work across the term, and finished with thread, small found objects, and personal imagery.

For years I worked under the name Awakening Artistry — and it served me well. But over the past few years something shifted in me personally. I came to faith, and with that came a quiet but clear need to bring my work into alignment with who I am now.

The techniques haven’t changed. The processes are the same — the warmth, the non-judgment, the intimacy of the studio — all of that remains.

What’s changed is the story I tell about where it all comes from. I believe creativity is part of what it means to be human — a capacity that never truly leaves us, it only gets buried.

My work simply helps people find their way back to it.

Made Visible felt right because that’s what this work does. It makes things visible — on the canvas, and quietly within.

Same work. Truer name. Welcome to Made Visible Art Studio.

Pure intuitive mark-making on paper — no agenda, no image, no outcome. Neutral monochromatic colours, gestural, expressive. Wax, Charcoal, tea, coffee, ink, jik. This becomes the literal ground layer that began our journey.
Most artists know intuitively: that the best work does not come from the ego straining, controlling and performing — but from something that happens when the ego relaxes its grip enough for something deeper to come through.
We worked with the concept of Kenotic creativity:
– Releasing the need for a predetermined outcome — not because outcome doesn’t matter, but because controlling the outcome blocks what wants to come through
– Emptying the false self — the performer, the perfectionist, the person who needs the artwork to prove something — so the truer, deeper self can make
– Making space for the Spirit — when we stop filling every silence and gap with our own agenda, something else can enter
– Working from love and abundance rather than fear and scarcity — Fujimura is explicit: the kenotic artist creates from a place of overflow, not striving
– The hand knowing things the head doesn’t — releasing cognitive control and working through body and material is itself a form of kenosis. The mark arrives before the meaning. Something empties and something else enters.
