Prevention is where the future of health care begins.

We invite everyone to join us for the second Global Prevention Symposium at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. This program will bring together leaders across dentistry, medicine, public health, academia, and industry to explore how we can advance a more integrated approach to prevention through earlier diagnosis, preservation of the natural dentition, oral-systemic health, precision medicine, and scalable models of care.

The mouth is not separate from the rest of the body. Oral health both shapes and reflects the health of the entire body, from chronic disease risk to overall well-being. Yet dentistry and medicine are still too often practiced side by side rather than together. Placing prevention at the center of both fields, and building real bridges between them, may be one of the most powerful ways to help people live healthier, longer lives and to make care more equitable.

📅 December 5, 2026 | 9 AM to 5 PM EST
📍 Joseph B. Martin Conference Center, Boston + live online

I'm delighted to share that our research has been featured by the FAPESP News Agency.

In this multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, we found that adjunctive host modulation therapy with omega-3 fatty acids and low-dose aspirin achieved clinical outcomes similar to adjunctive antibiotic therapy in the treatment of periodontitis.

After one year of follow-up, a similar percentage of patients in both groups achieved the endpoint of periodontal treatment, demonstrating comparable clinical efficacy. Interestingly, combining both therapies did not provide additional clinical benefits. Omega-3 and aspirin were administered for six months, while metronidazole and amoxicillin were prescribed for 14 days.

These findings highlight the potential of host modulation as an evidence-based strategy for periodontal therapy.

It is incredibly rewarding to see this work gaining visibility and contributing to the advancement of evidence-based periodontology.

NEW STUDY | Adjunctive Therapies for Severe Periodontitis

This study evaluated whether antibiotics or anti-inflammatory supplementation (omega-3 + low-dose aspirin), alone or combined, could improve the outcomes of non-surgical periodontal therapy in patients with severe periodontitis.

109 patients were randomly assigned to receive: • Placebo • Antibiotics (MTZ + AMX) • Omega-3 + low-dose aspirin • Combination therapy

After 1 year, all adjunctive therapies promoted better clinical outcomes compared with subgingival instrumentation alone, with fewer residual deep periodontal pockets.

These findings suggest that both: • MTZ + AMX and • Omega-3 + low-dose aspirin
may be effective adjunctive approaches for the treatment of severe periodontitis.

Patients are interested in their own individual outcomes instead of population-level averages. In the age of AI and precision medicine, prognostic models are gaining momentum in dentistry as well. A prediction model requires technical expertise and clinical insight.

A clearly formulated clinical question helps define an outcome which should be predictable using clinically available features. Rigorous evaluation including external testing and interpretability analysis are all prerequisites for translation into practice. taken in Harvard School of Dental Medicine by @magdaferes

Computer vision for dental ultrasonography

We are excited to share a sneak peek into our latest deep learning research as a joint effort among the Feher and Feres Labs at Harvard and domain expert @lorenzotavelli. Non-invasive, chairside, and real-time, ultrasonography has many advantages for various dental diagnostic indications. Clinical adoption is limited by the fact that dentists are not trained in the routine interpretation of these images.

Computer vision is an intuitive approach to assist with diagnostic interpretation of ultrasonography. However, this imaging modality has some unique characteristics, including reverberation, speckle, and other artifacts, that require special attention.

Here, we used an instance segmentation model (Mask R-CNN with a ResNet-50-FPN backbone; Detectron2, Meta Research) to identify dental hard tissue, periodontal soft tissue, and buccal bone on ultrasonography images. The raw model output is fed through a custom post-processing pipeline that eliminates artifacts and resolves conflicting predictions.

Our model was trained using data from @harvarddentalmed and externally tested using data from @umichdentistry. In this short video, we show semantic projections designed to simplify the clinical use of our model.

Full manuscript coming soon. Visit feher.ai for further information about the Feher Lab’s projects and opportunities to engage. We acknowledge funding by @osteologyfoundation and @harvardmed. by @magdaferes
