What do girls want? ✨Hint: It's not what you think...✨

🔬 With roughly only 9% of NIH research funding dedicated to conditions that disproportionately affect women, we need to support research to close knowledge gaps, find better treatments, and save lives.

This October, we're digging into some of the most surprising and unsettling stories from women's health history.

This antique device may look like something straight out of a horror movie, but 150 years ago, versions of the speculum were commonly used during gynecologic exams. Similar instruments have actually existed for nearly 2,000 years, with examples dating back to Ancient Rome.

While medical tools like this can seem frightening through a modern lens, they also tell the story of how women's healthcare has evolved over time. Looking back at the past helps us better understand the progress that has shaped the care we have today.

At Magee-Womens Research Institute, we're building on that progress by advancing the research and discoveries that will shape the future of women's health.

👻 Follow along for more spooky facts from women's health history.

I’m officially headed to the 2026 Women Who Rock Benefit Concert on Saturday October 17th at Stage AE!

The Women Who Rock Benefit Concert is about so much more than a concert. It brings together the power of music, community and advocacy to support women in music and help accelerate women’s health research.

Did you know?

* It wasn’t until 1993 that federal law required women to be included in medical research.
*Women spend 25% more of their lives in poor health than men.
* Just 1% of medical research funding, excluding cancer, goes toward female-specific conditions.
*In 2025 alone, nearly $2.5 billion in active NIH research funding was terminated with women researchers disproportionately affected.
*In 2025, just 21.6% of musicians booked at major
U.S. music festivals were women.

Join me on the PINK carpet for a wonderful cause🩷 Ticket Link in Bio!

Every 5 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer.

This September, during Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, we're raising awareness of the cancers that affect thousands of women each year, including ovarian, cervical, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers.

Knowing the signs, understanding your risk, and staying up to date on recommended screenings can help start important conversations about women's health.

Could where you live impact your odds for surviving ovarian cancer? New research suggests yes.

A study led by MWRI investigator Dr. Francesmary Modugno and colleagues found that women living in socially vulnerable neighborhoods had a higher risk of death following an ovarian cancer diagnosis. The impact was especially pronounced among Black women, who faced a greater risk of death than white women in the study.

The findings add to growing evidence that factors beyond biology, including neighborhood conditions and barriers to care, may influence ovarian cancer outcomes.

This 1970 archival photo shows expectant parents participating in a prenatal nutrition class at Magee-Womens Hospital.

During the 1960s and 1970s, growing research highlighted the important connection between maternal nutrition and infant health. Magee incorporated nutrition education into its prenatal curriculum, helping families learn about balanced diets, healthy weight gain, and nutritional needs during pregnancy.

These classes reflected Magee's commitment to preventive care and empowering families with knowledge to support healthy pregnancies and newborns.

Today is World Cancer Research Day, and @reclaim_october is marking it the way we mark every October: by putting money where the science is.

This check went to Magee-Womens Research Institute to fund metastatic breast cancer research. Here’s what your dollars are doing, straight from Magee:

Metastatic breast cancer is usually treated right away with more than one type of therapy, even though some patients might do just as well on gentler treatment alone. Their study, LBC-Monitor, is testing whether a simple blood test can help answer this question for patients with metastatic invasive lobular breast cancer (mILC), a less common subtype that can be harder to track with scans alone.

The study has grown beyond UPMC Hillman’s main campus to a community site in Harrisburg, PA, with Johnstown, PA expected to open soon, and it’s laying the groundwork for a follow-up study, GRACE.

Stage 4 research stays underfunded until enough of us refuse to let it. You don’t need a diagnosis to be part of this. Share your story. Fund the work. Get involved. Details to follow.

October we lock in.
