La Virgen de Guadalupe appeared in 1531 to an indigenous man during the settler colonial invasion from Spain & the largest genocide in the history of what is now called Mexico. Some believe she was the ancient Aztec mother goddess Tonantzin, disguised as the Christian Virgin Mary and others believe she is a sort of Divine Mother hybrid. In any case she was able to be embraced by both the church- the ideological and religious arm of the oppressor, and millions of the native people who converted either in sincere worship or in an attempt to survive the ongoing genocide. La Virgen is considered ‘The Mother of Mexico’ and in many ways acts as a bridge which represented survival of indigenous life and spirituality under the cloak of Catholicism.

The spiritual illness of supremacy ideology is clearly a recurring sickness in the soul of humanity, and its harms on both humans and the larger ecosystems we are imbedded in affect all. The living and the dead and those yet to come. I offer this artwork to the mythological mix we’re working with as we collectively aim to decolonize, repair, and heal our relationships on this magical planet we share.

Since I was the channel for this painting’s creation, it includes my personal prayer for healing my ancestral lines and the religious upbringing I’ve been deconstructing for half my life. It also includes my deep gratitude to Mexico and her people, her plants, and her ceremonies.

It’s been almost 3 years since the painting first began and the whole story is far too long and intricate to share here. Though I will say that it is Phase 1 of a larger & longer vision and I am still in the process of listening to how She wants to be shared.

For now, I present:

Thank you beekeeper, for bringing this special bottlebrush bear swarm, and all of your knowledge, care and concern. What a blessing to experience such intimacy with this hive in transition on a mountainside so sacred to me. @elisbees by @maggie.eileen

My personal paintings take years to complete. Mostly because I cannot stay in one place, but also because they are living prayers that require space & self development. Tomorrow I leave my sweet little art studio apartment, and if all goes according to plan, I won’t return until 2027. In the meantime I shall tend to my prayers outside of the studio. Apartment content in order: last month, last year, last night. by @maggie.eileen

If you are in San Francisco next month, one of my paintings will be in a group show. I will not be there but other people and their paintings will be. It is neither of these paintings, but one of them is in San Francisco too. But you can’t see it because it’s inside my sister’s house. Unless you know my sister and then you can but you have to read my niece a book and she doesn’t like it when you do it in a loud deep voice, so you have to read it more softly. Also the painting of mine in the group show has datura flowers in it- which are in neither of these paintings because these have Brugmansia in them and that’s not Datura, but a cousin. And if I have a baby someday it will be my niece’s cousin, and my nephew is just a baby so he isn’t really into books yet. by @maggie.eileen
