• ARTIST SPOTLIGHT • MAGGIE NOWINSKI @maggienow On view in “Internalized Landscapes: I can feel this place in my bones” through August 29th. ““My current body of work evolves from an investigation of personal, collective and empathetic anxieties. In my drawings, installations and prints, ambiguous human and botanical biological systems combine to inform fictionalized observed living subjects. These specimens emerge from an imagined empirical study. In the face of what seems inevitable extinction these bodies thrive. They posit the notion that strength, pain, humor, toxicity can be embodied even as we observe a constant stream of violence, environmental disaster and species vulnerability. I often wonder how we process the influx of our daily and global realities and where in the body we absorb these truths. When I make my work I call upon my own body, and am aware of the liminal space where my attention fluctuates between intimate and vast, and where internal and external somatic phenomena often seem collapsible and enigmatic. How do we embrace the paradox of all that is vital in a time of condemned inevitability? My conjured forms reflect a buildup of our exquisite psychosomatic scar tissue within biological systems. The process of making these drawings channels unease as the intricate line-work engages my desire for repetition and is directed towards the transformation of ache through imagined forms.” - Maggie Nowinski IMAGES: 1. ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ Thank you to @overlapartspace and @alicia.renadette for inviting my newest work into the dialogue for this thoughtfully curated group exhibition “Internalized Landscapes: I Can Feel This Place In My Bones” Looking forward to joining for a panel discussion this Saturday 8/15 4:30-6:00pm See you then w/ @maybabcock @merillcomeau @karingielen_art ✨ …………. A dying body is, until it is not, still a living body. I refer to my specimen-like drawings as Somaflora - a kind of bodily blooming related to the plant world, but not quite of it. More recently, these drawings have become deeply connected to significant personal losses. Witnessing a loved one leaving their body was obviously profoundly difficult, but also felt sacred, intimate, and painfully precious. This experience has invited me to think differently about grief - not only as sadness, exhaustion, or absence, but as something rich and even vital. I’m continually drawn to seemingly opposing truths: the places where seemingly contradictory feelings can exist at once. I’m not sure whether this is a liminal space or simply a poetic one, but it is often where I find orientation in my work.” . ‘A Gateway for Greetings and Goodbyes’ (images 1-11)- part of my current solo exhibition “Sentient Translations” at the Mariboe Gallery & Donna Sands Exhibition Hall @peddieschool . Exhibition dates: September 22 – October 26 (public welcome by appt-dm gallery director Craig Dale @beyond.the.photograph) . . In this exhibition I combine drawing and sculpture to feel and find my way through loss, transition and shifting relationships between (my body)bodies & natural forms and observation & imagined specimens. I am curious about my desire for orientation and simultaneous instinct to reject it. . I’m grateful for the opportunity to bring these works into a new space and context, and for the ideas, conversations and questions that emerged there. Thank you to Peddie School faculty, staff and especially the amazing students for welcoming me as a Visiting Exhibiting Artist just a few weeks ago. (I hope to share more about/images from the workshops and talks soon!) #biogeosomatopographical #cairns #somaflora Thank you @beyond.the.photograph for the invite - what a special place! . Note: rereading A Book of Dreams (Peter Reich) which I first read as a teenager, considered choosing this song to accompany this post, decided it was heavy handed but app wil not delete it (cloudbusting or bust?!). by @maggienow
We are thrilled to present the 2026 ECA Gallery Invitational, “Insistent Ecologies”, featuring the vital and powerful work of Alicia Renadette, Maggie Nowinski, and Malaika Ross. This year’s show explores the ways in which artists can both expose and practice the utilization and application of materials and environments for positive and vital growth. Inspired by chamomile growing through a street curb and oysters making habitats in discarded subway cars, ECA has curated an exhibition of dynamic and prolific artists whose work in some way illustrates the insistence of life that keeps living and thriving with whatever nourishment it has access to — essentially a claiming + reclaiming of sustenance for good. We invite you all to join us at the Artists Reception during Art Walk on Saturday October 3rd from 4-7pm at ECA Gallery. We also encourage you to check out the artists’ work: @alicia.renadette @maggienow @malaikaross_studio #itsineasthampton #inittogether #art4all #supportlocalartists #supportlocalbusiness artwalkeasthampton 💜💙💚 easthamptonma newengland westernmass westernmassart othersidema connecticutrivervalley easthampton easthamptoncityarts igers413 igersmass visitwesternmass local localart community communityart 413 01027 by @maggienow
✨ Meet Fun Sized Artist: Maggie Nowinski! ✨ Maggie Nowinski is an interdisciplinary and teaching artist based in Western Massachusetts whose work lives at the intersection of drawing, printmaking, installation, and performance. Through imagined specimen drawings that appear as abject human-botanical entities, she investigates somatic response and human emotion, combining traditional and unusual media, audio, and performative processes into works that are as rigorous as they are deeply felt. Maggie is bringing that distinctive, embodied vision down to a miniature scale for the Fun Sized Public Art Festival! Grab a festival map, train your eyes on the small details, and hunt for her hidden, site-specific work tucked away in downtown Northampton this September 26–27. 🎨 Follow her work at @maggienow! #FunSizedArtFest #NorthamptonMA #ArtistSpotlight #MiniatureArt #PublicArt by @maggienow

Massachusetts-based artist Maggie Nowinski works in pen and ink to conjure specimens that have never existed — and yet feel startlingly, viscerally alive. Her ongoing Somaflora Specimens (Partially Remembered Series) is born from direct observation, imagined hybrids, and what she calls "somatic absorption": the body as landscape, the interior as wilderness. In Molter, a botanical body is caught mid-transformation — dense bundles of gathered tissue press outward from voids of solid black, seed pods and withered tendrils suspended between growth and decay. In Somaflora Specimen: Immunity II, an entire ecosystem erupts from the page: three spiny crowns rising from interlocking twisted stems, sinuous black ribbons threading through like vascular pathways or mycelial roots — a body marshaling its defenses, building complexity as survival. Every mark is intentional. No underdrawings, no shortcuts. Just thousands of pen strokes accumulating into forms that seem to grow before your eyes. 🖤 In Bloom, on view through June 13 at G-Town Arts, Georgetown (Redding), CT → GTownArts.com to explore more. #InBloom #MaggieNowinski #PenAndInk #Somaflora #BotanicalArt #ContemporaryDrawing by @maggienow
