I am so pleased to announce 𝖋𝖔𝖘𝖘𝖎𝖑 𝖒𝖊𝖒𝖔𝖗𝖞 - an upcoming solo show at the Schweinfurth Arts Center in Auburn, NY (@schweinfurthart ). I am so fortunate to exhibit my work through affiliation with the magnificent Stone Quarry Hill Art Park (@stonequarryartpark ), where I have been filming for the last year or more. This show will happen in conjunction with solo shows by beloved Patrick McGuan and another fabulous Patrick, Costello (@_patrickcostello ). I will be showing a NEW film that I have been piecing together since the 2024 solar eclipse, as well as some installed sculptural and image works. It will open on May 31st and run through the summer; mark your calendars and more details to come. Central NY, I would be so thrilled to see you.

Fossil Memory traces history through direct and indirect artifacts, using planetary movements and geological records as jumping-off points for memory and subjectivity. Shooting on celluloid film, Ellery Bryan begins at the solar eclipse and records performances in quarries and rock collections, personal and scientific archives. They collapse vignettes of past gestures into mineral composition, activating silver to visually explore recollection. This work uses material history to probe unstable perceptions, connections and ephemerality.

The Grand Rapids Film Society is proud to present Artist Showcase Series: Ellery Bryan. Join us for an evening with Ellery as they present a program of their short films in a showcase format with commentary for each work followed by a discussion and Q&A.

Ellery Bryan (they/them) is a nonbinary visual artist and educator translating physical to ephemeral media. Their artwork traces non-linear themes of loss and ritualized gestures of connection through analog films, performances, sonic and sculptural installations. Ellery’s embodied interactions with autobiographical symbols, reflexive acknowledgment of the film medium and durational relationships between body and place build a sensory language for significance and felt-experience. They are an Assistant Professor of Film and Video Production at Grand Valley State University.

A programme of works that remind us of the essence of experimental film as an adventure in perception.
The acts of seeing, looking, watching are explored in their relationship to the eye of the camera. What does the medium of film allow us to see that we wouldn’t otherwise? Things you can’t un-see. If you listen carefully, can you hear the act of seeing? Touch the vision when it disappears with the torn-out eyeball, taste the watching with visceral disgust. These sensorially intense films question assumptions of what it’s like to see, exploring the potential of the audiovisual medium to appeal to the full human sensorium. Can a film make your throat hurt or the top of your head tingle?
