This event has been postponed, a new date will be announced when it is available.

The Grand Rapids Film Society is proud to present Artist Showcase Series: Ellery Bryan. Join us for an evening with Ellery as they present a program of their short films in a showcase format with commentary for each work followed by a discussion and Q&A.

Ellery Bryan (they/them) is a nonbinary visual artist and educator translating physical to ephemeral media. Their artwork traces non-linear themes of loss and ritualized gestures of connection through analog films, performances, sonic and sculptural installations. Ellery’s embodied interactions with autobiographical symbols, reflexive acknowledgment of the film medium and durational relationships between body and place build a sensory language for significance and felt-experience. They are an Assistant Professor of Film and Video Production at Grand Valley State University.

A programme of works that remind us of the essence of experimental film as an adventure in perception.
The acts of seeing, looking, watching are explored in their relationship to the eye of the camera. What does the medium of film allow us to see that we wouldn’t otherwise? Things you can’t un-see. If you listen carefully, can you hear the act of seeing? Touch the vision when it disappears with the torn-out eyeball, taste the watching with visceral disgust. These sensorially intense films question assumptions of what it’s like to see, exploring the potential of the audiovisual medium to appeal to the full human sensorium. Can a film make your throat hurt or the top of your head tingle?

Festivus Artemisia vulgaris! How fun to spend the afternoon with such wonderful and kind souls! We focused on pulling Mugwort, giving other plants more room and light. We switched to Bird’s-foot Trefoil after the Mugwort felt got! We learned from Gail that the Trefoil is also a dyestuff producing a vibrant yellow!

dear tuli, I remember the first time I saw you cry, it was not out of sadness or frustration, but out of pure affection and gratitude, talking about people’s quirks and habits you found endearing, I remember it feeling like a newness, meeting someone who could do that with such ease and openness. I also remember you letting yourself into my dark room uninvited and crawling into my bed to hold me when I felt so downtrodden and that I barely had the energy to move my body. I wrote a poem inspired by you that’s about wanting to reassure someone that you’re not forgetting to have fun. I’ve learned so much about myself and others through our relationship, not just about who I am but also who I’m not, what I envy, where pleasure lies, what I trust and what I don’t, and all my particular life-giving insatiabilities. Lots of gratitude, xoxo

& so much gratitude to everyone near and far who showed up to participate and bring very sweet and supportive togetherness to this event, I could hardly believe it 💝💧

And thank u to saskia and all other photographers,,,most of these pics are not mine lol

This past weekend, some incredible film-makers from our community got together to present a series of their most recent work at the FMC screening room. Many bold and vibrant films and video works were presented, and in the process of the screening we managed to get a few photos of the faces behind the work. Thank you to everyone who came out to watch what our community has been working on!
