Music For Stalagmites is a slow-form, immersive album, marking the accumulation of over 20 years of experimentation from the Middlesbrough based artist.
The album explores the duality of both primal and futuristic worlds, drawing inspiration from nature, technology and evolution to create a body of work that transcends beyond any timeline that has come before us. Forging vivid and otherworldly subterranean environments that transport the listener to an alternate haven. Music for Stalagmites embodies the sound of animism, a concept where all forms of nature hold a spiritual essence.

Like many, Hulusi was a musical project that connected the dots between DIY spirit, technological advancements and the burgeoning cultural phenomenon of acid house. The project operated outside of the then perceived, traditional band conventions, instead developing their sound and exchanging ideas through the format of demo tapes and floppy disks, nurturing their work through individual bedroom studios and feedback sessions.

Despite operating in near obscurity, Hulusi - The Dream EP acts as an audible catalyst to transport the listener to a different time and place, offering a lucid snapshot into the musical and cultural explorations of the past whilst simultaneously remaining a timeless piece of music.

Release day. MAGIC002 and the long-awaited reissue of Eternal is out now.

Active through the late 80s and early 90s acid house movement that swept through the UK, G.F.X. quickly became a name spotted on the line up of many nights that were popping up across the North east, as the area began to receive their first transfusion of acid house.   Amongst the often undocumented north east acid house story lay whispers of legendary parties where youths gathered to escape the mundane. Most fondly spoken of, was Middlesbrough’s ‘Butter Loggie’, a bizarre sounding party that grew to crowds as big 10,000 in what was a community centre by day and rave by night. Geoff recalls calls the impact and ferality of the event, a wild and loose party where the soundsystem shook through your bones at the touch of his keys. These early experiences provided Geoff with his first glimpses of spirituality, which provided much of the inspiration behind the EP’s title track ‘Eternal’.

It's been a couple weeks now since the release of my album. I wanted to dive a little deeper into it here.

Music For Stalagmites is a conceptual album based around bringing sentience to Stalagmites, building a world of their own, through slow textured music, field recordings, and sound design to mental imagery.

I’m fascinated with nature, and wanted a project drawing together the natural world with my love of music. Gritty and eerie yet beautiful and growing slowly over millennia, stalagmites were the perfect fit.

The album conceptualises stalagmites as sentient beings, imagining sound as nourishment for their formation and their lives underground as vibrant and ceremonial. It balances euphoria with harsh textures to reflect their cave environments, percussion wrote to the sound of animals and field recordings of cave water.

Musically, the album draws from leftfield downtempo, dub, trance, ambient, electro, trip-hop, and the hazy afterglow of 90s chill-out rooms. Heavily inspired by UK ambient techno legends such as @higher.intelligence.agency @futuresoundoflondon @theorblive @orbital and Global Communications as well as @undergroundresistance313 & Drexciya

To me, an album is a defining and significant moment of an artist, an opportunity to be thought-provoking and breathe art and creativity into your music.
