Breaking down some of the process behind my water percussion in 'Column Science' from the B side of Music For Stalagmites.

The meaning behind this track signifies the science behind the formation of limestone columns in caves. Once permeated through the ground, chemically altered rainwater droplets help form stalagmites and stalactites, which eventually meet to form columns.

Imitating this through sound, Column Science begins with raw field recordings of cave water droplets, which evolve into rhythmic percussion to build the foundation of the music through various layers, processing techniques and effects.

It's been a couple weeks now since the release of my album. I wanted to dive a little deeper into it here.

Music For Stalagmites is a conceptual album based around bringing sentience to Stalagmites, building a world of their own, through slow textured music, field recordings, and sound design to mental imagery.

I’m fascinated with nature, and wanted a project drawing together the natural world with my love of music. Gritty and eerie yet beautiful and growing slowly over millennia, stalagmites were the perfect fit.

The album conceptualises stalagmites as sentient beings, imagining sound as nourishment for their formation and their lives underground as vibrant and ceremonial. It balances euphoria with harsh textures to reflect their cave environments, percussion wrote to the sound of animals and field recordings of cave water.

Musically, the album draws from leftfield downtempo, dub, trance, ambient, electro, trip-hop, and the hazy afterglow of 90s chill-out rooms. Heavily inspired by UK ambient techno legends such as @higher.intelligence.agency @futuresoundoflondon @theorblive @orbital and Global Communications as well as @undergroundresistance313 & Drexciya

To me, an album is a defining and significant moment of an artist, an opportunity to be thought-provoking and breathe art and creativity into your music.

Thanks for reading, stay curious 🪨 ☁️

NEW ARRIVAL

Rees - Music For Stalagmites | Magic Ritmo [MAGIC004]

Music For Stalagmites is a slow-form, immersive album, marking the accumulation of over 20 years of experimentation from the Middlesbrough based artist.

The album explores the duality of both primal and futuristic worlds, drawing inspiration from nature, technology and evolution to create a body of work that transcends beyond any timeline that has come before us. Forging vivid and otherworldly subterranean environments that transport the listener to an alternate haven. Music for Stalagmites embodies the sound of animism, a concept where all forms of nature hold a spiritual essence.
