Some fun under the sea henna for my amazing friend who is growing another human due to arrive soon! The whales have been a theme lately. This belly is inspired by a fabric design I made last week. It feels good to be connecting with whales through drawing them 🐋 Here is to a smooth birth and happy and healthy life to mom and baby 💦

This weekend, a girl asked me to do a henna design for her that her mom had done for her before she passed away, which really touched my heart and reminded me of the every evolving/temporary nature of life.

It got me thinking of these ancient traditions that connect us. These threads of inspiration. One of the things I love about henna is that it is an ancient tradition and through it, we are connected to all of the others who did it before us. I know I have said this before, but I feel like henna’s true nature is of inspiration, as it is temporary, but what lives on and grows through the world after it is gone is the inspiration it creates in the present moment.

We humans are like this too, although our lives are much longer than henna on our skin, but we are temporary too. The funny thing is that henna does actually create a permanent stain on our skin, but our skin falls off, so it’s us that is temporary, or atleast more temporary than the henna stain on the skin.

There is something really beautiful in the recognition that this present moment is like no other. Any moment we are reminded of this, we can drop into the magic that is life. This great mystery of existence that is full of wonder. For me, the art of henna is one of the ways I am reminded of this. I am really grateful for each person that sits with me to do henna. I love the physical art of it, but even more, I love the connection and inspiration that the art creates.

Throwback to one of my favorite henna moments when my daughter was 4. Watching her grow up from the perspective of doing henna on her hands and feet has been a unique joy as a mom and henna artist. This was the first time she sat long enough for me to do something on both of her feet.

It has been a lovely summer full of henna and there are still a few weekends to come! I am super thankful for all of the opportunities to keep aligning a bit more each year with my path with henna. I am very thankful for this art form and all of the beautiful people I meet through it. I’m thankful for the plant kingdom and all they give to us humans!

On an inspiration level, pottery keeps coming in as a metaphor for me. I have been seeing the spinning wheel as the turning of the earth, of time, of lives, of energy. Our heart and truth are at the center of the wheel, and our awareness and intentions shape the clay around it, as we feel the center and shape the clay, bringing the energy up and down over and over to align the earthen body with the core truth of our being. This practice, over and over, creates the frequency that we carry in our body, that creates the life around us that we live and affects all that we interact with.

I’ve been really enjoying playing around with henna as a way to set intentions.. the energy is good. It is if the earth and it helps align us with that frequency, which is our true nature, because we are nature and the more we can align with that, the better off we are.

Playing around with design and meaning through the art of henna at @kripalucenter . I love the conversations over henna and my favorite kinds of conversations might be the nature of existence, which is a topic that flows naturally at Kripalu. I spent 4 months there 20 years ago and it is where I first started doing henna, so it is so fun to be offering it there now, and hearing all the amazing things people are learning in their workshops. There is so much cool stuff going on there. If you haven’t been, I highly recommend it!
