Wow. Where do I even begin?

Over the past few weeks, I’ve reflected on my journey at Howard University, and I am overwhelmed with gratitude.
As a first-generation student, there were many moments when I felt like I was simply trying to make it to the finish line. But looking back now, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Howard has forever changed my life.

First and foremost, all glory to God. None of this would have been possible without Him. Even when I didn’t believe I could keep going, He made a way and carried me through every challenge.

To my mentors, family, friends, and community: thank you. Your love, support, and belief in me sustained me through it all.

Most of my time at Howard was spent in the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, a place that shaped me in ways I’ll carry forever. To my cohort, peers, and professors: thank you for inspiring, challenging, and pouring into me. Learning within a legacy of excellence, artistry, and activism has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. Howard opened doors I never imagined possible and gave me the confidence to soar.

The dream of attending Howard was planted in my heart when I was in sixth grade. If you told 11-year-old Mahlu that she would one day graduate from her dream school, she would have laughed in your face.

So, Mahlu: your dreams are not too big. Howard was once just a dream, too.

There is still so much ahead, but I leave this chapter with a full heart and endless gratitude

With love and gratitude,
