#HappyAnniversary 65 years ago in 1961 for the first time in Howard University history the BFA in Theatre was offered to the freshman class of students in the newly established College of Fine Arts.

In 1964 the College of Fine Arts graduated its first class of 43 students with 14 receiving the BFA.

In 1960, approximately 15 to 20 universities in the United States offered a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in theatre or drama.

In 1961 Howard University became one among the 15-20 Universities to offer the BFA and it held the position as the only HBCU to offer the BFA degree in Theatre until 1969.

The BFA degree is unique in that it provides advanced professional training that prepares students to immediately work in the industry with a multi-hyphenated skill set.

Howard’s theatre program ranks #1 in HBCU theatre training programs and the BFA legacy is largely the reason why! #HUYouKnow #TheatrePrograms #BFA

In trying to always defend myself, I miss where I could actually be more understanding, miss where I went wrong, miss us, miss what the goal of this whole thing is supposed to be in the first place: love, relationship, a break from all the other spaces that force us to prove that how we feel and how we hurt is valid.

Mahlet Gebreyesus graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre.

Following her time at Howard, her plans involve being apart of new works and already established plays and musicals in the DMV theatre area while spending my time to explore life post grad! With a hope to travel and explore the world more while also auditioning for shows in New York and abroad!

Mahlet’s Advice to incoming and continuing Howard Students is to take advantage of every opportunity and never be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Howard will open so many doors for you, so trust your journey, explore your passions, and enjoy every moment of growth along the way.

Congratulations Mahlet! We are so proud of you and wish you the best of luck in your new beginnings.

With Love,
The Jewels 💜💎
