Essay Excerpt: After soundcheck, the band rehearses in the green room, working through an acoustic version of a song. Formed in 2009, the band has released eight studio albums, including its latest, Higher Up in the Hills, in spring 2025. The album was dedicated to Luke and Will’s father, David Mallett, who died in December 2024. Through difficult periods and uncertainty, the fans have remained a steady source of support. “A couple of times we thought that we were pretty close to maybe the ship was going to go down,” he said. “But we found a way to right the ship.” Will credits the fans with giving the band a reason to continue. “The fans would be so pissed if we didn’t last, we’d be in trouble.” — PHOTO / TIM GREENWAY

Essay Excerpt: A week later, at the Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield, the dynamic between the band and me feels more relaxed. I am more comfortable around them, and they seem more at ease with me and my camera. Brian sets up his drums before the band’s show at the center. Loading and unloading equipment can be tedious. But after doing it for so long, the routine has become almost automatic. “It’s almost like second nature. It can be kind of a zen moment, too, because you’re just focused on moving your gear and setting it up. When Newcastle Inn became available, it was a natural tie-in to the wellness business, say @waterstruckwellness owners Ashley Baldwin and Kyle Markmann. After a session at Waterstruck, clients sometimes asked if they could sleep in a yurt that was on the Waterstruck site. The couple started to think about how to create an overnight or weekend package. Construction of another facility at Waterstruck seemed like a lot.
