Would you like to win this boat? Our Sweepstakes is coming to a close on November 2; LINK IN BIO!

The Original Beetle Cat Boat was designed and built in 1921, and immediately began to appear along the shores of New England. Over 4,000 of these boats have been built to date. The design of the Original Beetle Cat was taken from the old 20–30 foot catboats that were used for fishing in shallow waters along Cape Cod. Notable owners of Beetle Cats include John Kerry, Jacqueline Onassis (who had one shipped to Greece in 1969 for John F. Kennedy Jr. and Caroline Kennedy to learn to sail), Steven Spielberg, and Calvin Klein.

In the years since the first boat was built, the design has remained essentially unchanged. The Original Beetle Cat Boat is 12 feet, 4 inches long and is a design adaptation of the great Cape Cod Cats. The wide beam, with the rudder not extending below the bottom of the keel, and centerboard that lifts up, are features that lend this boat to shallow waters. It is a boat that can be beached. The six-foot wide beam makes it unusually stable and gives it a large carrying capacity. This is hull #1853, built in 1981 by the Concordia Company.

All proceeds from this sweepstakes support the museum's Discovery Boatbuilding program, a hands-on, comprehensive wooden boatbuilding and woodworking program for local students. Be sure to stop by the Boatshop to see students building this year's fleet! by @mainemaritimemuseum

Ever wonder if there was any real magic practiced during the Salem Witch Trials? While the Village of Salem feared witchcraft to the point of persecution and execution of their friends and neighbors, many members of the community still engaged with folk magic in their daily lives.

✨Join Maya next Thursday, October 15th, to learn all about the folk magic that occurred in Salem during this era, including witch cakes, poppets, oomancy, and more. ✨

We’ll explore the origins of these traditions, investigate how they came into play during the Salem Witch Trials, and practice a 17th-century form of divination together. 🔮

Expect to hear a few connections between Maine and these infamous trials along the way.

Tickets are $30, $35, $40—choose what is appropriate and works for you.

🍷 With complementary light refreshments including beer and wine; come at 6:30 to socialize; lecture begins at 7:00 pm.

Registration through the museum website with the link in bio!

Telling the story of the Percy & Small Shipyard is a core part of our mission. In the Paint & Treenail Shop, The Mill Builiding, and The Mould Loft, visitors can now find updated signage and new interactive elements, designed to emulate and inform about processes from the historic shipyard. This is where the great schooners were built, and we're working to uplift the legacy of the people who built the ships, the environmental impact of the shipyard, and the technical achievements of building such a huge boat. by @mainemaritimemuseum
