“She has advocated for our son, educated us as parents and provided immense comfort during the most emotional chapter of our lives.

These are the words of a parent whose newborn was cared for by Linzy, a nurse in MHMMC Portland’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Linzy’s support of the family has earned her a DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. The nomination shares how her attentiveness and advocacy allowed the child to make rapid progress toward recovery:

“Linzy noticed that our son was looking pale, less active, and ‘just not himself.’ Thanks to her quick action, he received a timely blood transfusion and close monitoring. Shortly after, he was right back to his regular, spunky self. A week later, he became a candidate to trial less invasive breathing apparatuses — a milestone that was also a direct result of Linzy fiercely advocating for his progression and care.

Linzy has been a steady source of support throughout our son’s journey, constantly checking in on him as well as on my husband and me. She always makes us feel seen.

The entire staff at the Barbara Bush Children's NICU have made all the difference in our child's first weeks of life, and we will be forever grateful to the whole team. However, Linzy has truly gone above and beyond.”

The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses was created to recognize and honor the compassionate care nurses provide every day to the patients they serve. It is celebrated in over 5,400 healthcare facilities and nursing schools in 34 countries.

Congratulations, Linzy! by @mainemedicalcenter

For many patients with severe aortic stenosis, getting treatment once meant facing open-heart surgery and a lengthy recovery.

Thanks to Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), a minimally invasive approach to replace a damaged heart valve, many patients can receive a new heart valve through a minimally invasive procedure and return home quickly.

As MaineHealth celebrates more than 3,000 TAVR procedures performed, we're proud to continue providing advanced heart care that helps patients live longer, healthier and more active lives. Congratulations to the MaineHealth Structural Heart Program for achieving this remarkable milestone! Susan, a respiratory therapist at MHMMC Biddeford, has earned a PETAL Award for her care of a young patient with RSV. The nomination, submitted by the patient’s parent, explains how Susan’s expertise and compassion made a stressful moment manageable:

“Susan’s level of competency was immediately evident — she handled every aspect of my son’s respiratory care with confidence, precision and expertise. Beyond her clinical skills, Susan was exceptionally reassuring. She took the time to explain what was happening, helped ease our fears and provided comfort during a very overwhelming moment.

Susan was also wonderfully personable. She connected with my son in such a gentle and genuine way, helping him feel safe despite being in an unfamiliar and scary environment. Most importantly, she was extremely caring: her kindness and compassion truly went above and beyond what we could have hoped for.

Susan embodies everything a healthcare professional should be. We are deeply grateful for the care she provided, and she is more than deserving of this recognition.”

The PETAL Award recognizes, rewards and celebrates the special skills and compassionate care provided by our nursing support staff.

Congratulations, Susan! by @mainemedicalcenter

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder that screening can make all the difference.

Regular mammograms are one of the most important tools for early breast cancer detection. Women at average risk should begin annual screening mammograms at age 40, and a personalized risk assessment at any time can help determine the best screening plan for you.

Talk with your provider about your breast cancer risk and stay up to date with recommended screenings. Early detection saves lives. by @mainemedicalcenter

We're bursting with pride for the nearly 120 MaineHealth care team members, family members, and even a few four-legged friends who participated in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention- Maine Chapter Out of the Darkness Walks in Brunswick and Portland this September. 💜

From the inaugural Brunswick walk with Team Rise MaineHealth to Portland, where Team MaineHealth Beacon of Hope remained the largest team, our colleagues showed up with passion, purpose, and commitment. Not even a Nor'easter could stop them from continuing its six-year tradition of unwavering support for suicide awareness.

Thank you to everyone who walked, supported, and cheered for both teams. Together, we sent a powerful message across our communities: no one has to walk this journey alone. #suicideawareness Team MaineHealth Beacon of Hope - A large group of people wearing matching red shirts poses outdoors near a body of water, with a cloudy sky above.
